Protesters gather outside Ryan office

— Local people joined People for the American Way-Wisconsin in a demonstration of their opposition to the Republican presidential ticket in downtown Janesville on Thursday.

About 50 people gathered across the street from Rep. Paul Ryan's congressional office and heard speakers rail against Ryan and Mitt Romney on topics that included health care, trade policy, economic policy, women's rights and gay rights.

Romney announced Ryan as his running mate on Saturday.

Five Janesville police officers stood by. The protest in the vice presidential candidate's hometown was peaceful.

A handful of people came out of the Republican campaign office about four doors away and silently held signs in support of Ryan for Congress, Rep. Joe Knilans and the Romney-Ryan ticket. They also held a life-size cutout of Romney.

Scott Foval of the People for the American Way decried what he called the Romney-Ryan "far right agenda."

Romney picked Ryan to appeal to the "far right wing of the Republican Party," Foval said.

The crowd was supportive and chanted "shame!" when speakers mentioned Ryan's plans for Medicare and other policies.

Wisconsin journalist John Nichols told the crowd that Ryan should debate Vice President Joe Biden but also his Democratic opponent in the 1st District race.

"If you want to represent us in Washington, you should respect us enough to come here and debate in Wisconsin," Nichols said.

Nichols, who had a film crew following him, later chatted amicably about politics with the Republican demonstrators.

RAF, I've heard about paid people being brought in to protest without any shred of proof. Are you going to say that without proof it isn't true too? Have to be fair to both sides right? Or how about out of state buses coming to vote? Where is the proof?

Yes, onedayatatime. And we are letting our representatives give more and more to the rich and powerful and we all end up paying for it. We think we are in hard times now and we are slowly recovering. I on the other hand think we are headed for a very rude awakening.

dkush.. I agree whole heartedly with your post. I am also discouraged realizing my vote doesn't mean anything anymore. Then I realize I am playing right into their hands. That's just what the status quo want to happen, even Newt Ginrich said protest by not voting. With the passage of Citizens United corruption was legalized. This is why we cannot find good people to run for office. The Superpacs throw so much money into elections the only message heard is theirs. Unless you are a multi millionaire in this country you don't stand a chance in politics.

Want to know why the quality of people running for political office seems so low? This "protest rally" offers a few clues. For instance, the crowd chanted "shame!" when speakers mentioned Ryan's plans for Medicare and other policies. In other words, these protesters don't just disagree with Ryan, they want us to think he's morally deficient for recognizing the financial unsustainability of Medicare and offering a financial solution. In short, they demonize any with whom they disagree. And you don't have to be fair with demons, or their families as we saw during the Walker recall sham.

It's hard to get quality people to run for office when the character assassins lie in wait, urged on by partisans who think the ends justify the means, or that winning is all that matters.

It's so funny reading comments here and how people cannot think for themselves anymore. Sometimes I wonder if our children are the smarter ones. They don't want to vote. And I am starting to realize why now. Which of the two evils do we pick. It's time to get away from party lines and start voting independantly. Our representatives and all of us are being brainwashed. Everyone is either far left or far right. There is good and bad in both parties. Why can't we find any honest people who can run for office on their own beliefs and not be told what their party stands for? We need a balance here, not a divide and conquer. I have never seen more division and hate among people as I do now. I can see now why our children are so discouraged. We are becoming our own destructors. We should be standing together to fix what alot of our corrupt politicians from both sides have and are still doing to divide us all. I, for one, am sick and tired of watching CHILDREN fight and not getting anything resolved.

Oblamer...your screen name is sooo appropriate. Regarding your response to my post; It's very obvious you have no knowledge of history. Are you not aware of what the interstate highway system did for our country?
In response to your post "The majority have an opportunity to get educated..with billions of dollars invested in education to get mediocre results by graduating students who can't read or write?" You couldn't be more wrong with that statement. The majority have an opportunity to get educated, LOL. I guess they do if they want a lifetime of debt with student loans. I myself went to college with the help of Pell Grants (which Ryan wants to eliminate). That education enable me to be able to afford to help my two children go to college, breaking the cycle of poverty in my family. One has a Masters degree and the other has a PHD in International Economics. She just returned from a conference where the economic policies that the GOP want to instill in America mirror the economic policies of 3rd world nations was discussed. But of course you would view that as liberal, commie indoctrination. Those of us with a brain in our heads refer to that as knowledge.

So everyone that is against the protesters are Ryan's office were also against all of the protests of "Obamacare" right? It's time to stop blaming the other side for everything and time to stop following any political party blindly. There are bad politicians in both parties. There are rude disrespectful people from both parties. Until the people get fed up with the partisan hackery and vote for a candidate not a party, this will continue.

@nomoreres...I try to stay optimistic but it's hard after reading the posts on this site. I just wish people would stop blaming George Bush and President Obama. This has been happening over a long period of time, as I said, so slowly no one has noticed and now, when it is slapping them in the face, they are still unwilling to find out the truth for themselves. The reason we have more people on food stamps is not Obama's fault. It is a result of jobs being off shored and replaced with $8/hr service jobs. You know, all those jobs like Staples, that Mitt Romney created. Just like big business has done to companies in America, they want to run the govt the same way...short term thinking. Bleed it dry for every dime you can squeeze out of it and to hell with the future. What's going to happen when all of those $8/hr workers who have needed assistance to survive throughout their careers, are too old and decreped to work. At $8/hr I doubt they will have saved for retirement. I see a very depressing future for those under 55. Republicans have blocked the Jobs bill that would have repaired our infrastructure, no quick money to be made there. They want to repeal healthcare even though the CBO and others say it will increase the deficit by 2 trillion dollars if it is repealed. Why, because private insurance will no longer be able to extort every spare dollar a family might have. I haven't heard anyone bitching about the refund checks some received from thier providers because Obama Care requires that 80% of premimums go to patient care and only 20% is to go for administrative cost. That cuts into multimillion dollar salaries of insurance execs. Take a look at who are Paul Ryans top contributors. http://votesmart.org/candidate/campaign-...
He doesn't represent us people. From Project Vote Smart on issues and positions. "Paul Ryan refused to tell citizens where he stands on any of the issues addressed in the 2012 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests from Vote Smart, national media, and prominent political leaders."

x_ian, I think you may enjoy Chuck Thompson's new book, "Better Off Without ‘Em: A Northern Manifesto for Southern Secession." Salon.com has an interview with Chuck Thompson discussing his book at: [ http://www.salon.com/2012/08/12/should_t... ] I agree with many of the points Thompson makes and that it may be time for the south to secede for the good of both the north and the south. The seceded south would provide an ideologically like-minded home that may prove to be irresistible to northern neocons and tea party radicals.

@oneday @ 10:56, a very accurate depiction of what has happened and is continuing to happen. I, too, marvel at the inability of many people who are either unable or unwilling to recognize what is right in front of them. I may be a bit more optimistic than you, but it will be a long, hard struggle to undo what has been done. When it becomes too much I believe violence will prevail. That would be tragic. If the middle-class doesn't rebound it will be a sad situation for all.

Don't let the facts get in the way of your opinions righties. Ryan is a liar, and the Romney-Ryan team has been caught contradicting each other over and over again since the ticket was announced. "Perhaps Romney really doesn't remember the assault on John Lauber nearly a half-century ago, despite the fact that so many of the other people who were there have never forgotten it. Or perhaps he decided that claiming ignorance would be the safest course of crisis management. But what he said told people nothing about the man he is today and how he has changed and grown over that time. We're all different people than we were in our youth, and we all have regrets. The 17-year-old Mitt Romney may have been a privileged, entitled boy with a mean streak. The 65-year-old Mitt Romney missed an opportunity to convince us he's something different." What none of you seen to realize is that all of the whining back and forth on this site and others, doesn't mean squat. We the people have lost and it is too late to recover. We live in a republic with an Oligarchy form of govt. America has been on a downward spiral for the last 30 years, it's just been so slowly manipulated no one has noticed. The rich and powerful have spent billions buying off the politicians to have the laws written in thier favor, those laws will never be changed back to benefiting the majority. Most of us are patriotic and love the country that used to be America. It is not the America that now exists. You can't fix what you won't admit is broken. Until we pull our heads out of our collective a$$es and admit that our govt has been sold to the highest bidder we are doomed. Sorry to be all gloom and doom but I am simply facing reality. A few individuals have been able to convince the masses that anything that benefits the majority of society is socialism. When the majority is living in poverty and only the wealthy are able to afford an education, healthcare and a home, maybe then some will be enlightened. That reality is unfolding every day. We are far down that road and IMO, too far to recover.

So they decided to protest Pal Ryan in his home town. I assume we are supposed to believe then that even his hometown constituents despise him. The story says that 5 Janesville police officers were there. Well, we know then that at least 5 people from Janesville there. There rest? I doubt there were 5 others from Janesville in the crowd. They didn't even have a hometown speaker, it seems! The only 2 mentioned are Madison residents. Tim Cullen was probably available. I guess they didn't want him to speak. They came to trash Paul Ryan. Senator Cullen wouldn't support that agenda, no doubt.

Yep, a real "grassroots" effort, this. How impressive!
