Police report no arrests at Romney appearance
JANESVILLE Despite a small clash with protesters, police reported no incidents of violence and no arrests at the Monday appearance of presidential candidate Mitt Romney at the Monterey Mills plant in Janesville.
The Janesville Police Department had 45 officers on duty for Romney’s visit, Sgt. Brian Vaughn said.
Some police handled traffic, crowd control and gate security at the event while others were stationed as extra security at the Hampton Inn in Janesville, where Romney spent the night Sunday, Vaughn said.
U.S. Rep Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson also were at the appearance Monday.
About 10 Rock County sheriff’s deputies helped, and Dane County provided an armored vehicle. Dozens of Secret Service agents were on site, Vaughn estimated.
Police shut down Delavan Drive in front of the plant for most of Romney’s appearance.
Police reported no major clashes at the event, although at one point police pushed a group of about 30 protesters back from a spot on a grass terrace across the street from Monterey Mills.
Vaughn said the protesters had gathered within 75 yards of a “safe zone” that Secret Service had set up around Romney’s motorcade, which was parked on plant property.
Police told other protesters who wanted to enter plant property that they had to leave any backpacks and picket signs outside as part of Secret Service security protocols, Vaughn said.
He said city crews came in at 4 a.m. Monday to set up security gates, and officers worked from Thursday through Monday to stay in touch with the Secret Service.

cbrltr - Why does it matter if I was there or not? I don't care if there was a 100 police, secret service and swat! He has the same right as Obama did 4 years ago to campaign and I'd be willing to bet his cost for protection is a mere fraction of what Obama's was then. Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean they don't get the same rights as the one you like does!
How about a couple of months ago when Obama did a campaign fund raiser in downtown New York putting the entire city in complete grid lock for hours. What do you think it costs to shut down that size of city and protect him while he's getting $40,000 a plate for campaign funds? I think its time to stop standing in the glass house while throwing rocks for a while.

The average teacher hasn't seen a raise beyond inflation for years. The idea that they should take a pay cut because others have suffered during the recession is communist thinking. Even so, they were willing to do it.

Ezoner, your hero Reagan increased corporate income taxes in his first term, but held the line on personal income taxes. Exactly the opposite of what Walker has done to Wisconsin, considering a whole lot of union folks saw their take-home pay cut by 8%, and Walker actually INCREASED the budget.
Taxes are paid on PROFITS. They do not offset fixed or variable costs. Profits declined on some businesses because of reduced DEMAND from the recession, not because of increased competition. Most big businesses are experiencing record profits, and will continue to do so, hence the rise in the stock market. Increased DEMAND will increase business investment, not reduced taxes. Tinkle-down economics were debunked a few decades ago.

Zoom -- People like you do not think logically --Private salaries have decreased or remained the same at best and each home has reduced buying power, thats at current tax rates , and property values. Only in a fantasy world would public empoyees get a raise or not experience the same reductions.
Increasing Business Taxes -- makes ZERO sense. Businesses operate on profit, profit drives a return on investment for stakeholders. By increasing taxes, either a company must reduce fixed and variable cost (shut down facilities, trim employees) or settle for lower returns on investments and lower profit levels. Profits have been declining as competition has increased as a result of lower demand. Increasing taxes will simply drive further cuts and / or price increases, which will have a ripple effect. Simple logic is gone when Democraps think.

"Public school teachers deserve all they can get. However when times are tough, education is the first to get pinched."
First? You state that so matter-of-factly. There is no logical reason to cut education, unless there is an equal drop in student enrollment. Educators didn't cause the recession. They are taxpayers, like everybody else. Students still need a good education to deal with the new realities of the job market when times are tough.
Education is the great equilizer, yet the current administration marginalizes and even vilifies the teaching profession, when it's needed the most.
How to balance the budget? How about reducing tax breaks for those Corporations that are hoarding cash. DEMAND for products creates jobs, not tax breaks. Even Reagan increased the corporate tax rate to deal with the recession that began before his first term. Some of you folks are being bamboozled by the elite.

Private school teachers get to teach kids who actually want to be there. Their parents have a vested interest in them being there because they paid big bucks. Teacher to student ratio in the US for private schools is 11:1. Public schools is almost 30:1. Public school teachers are subject to some students who don't care. Whose parents don't care and yet teachers are expected to reach these kids. They are expected to care about every student even if that student doesn't care. Private school teachers just call the parents who (because they have a monetary investment and care) can get it straightened out. Public school teachers are way more than just teachers. Ask a private school teacher if they would teach public school even if it meant more money. Public school teachers deserve all they can get. However when times are tough, education is the first to get pinched.

College is optional, no? Not everyone will seek a higher education, so comparing the two doesn't make sense. Note also that most colleges agree on a basic set of skills required to be accepted. No, I wrote that all children should have an EQUAL education, and therfore an equal opportunity. School systems and taxes for that system are local, so different communities will have different education funding. That's where the State and Federal Governments come in, to help equalize things a little more, but ultimalely not entirely. A parochial education certainly doesn't cost the same everywhere, and a private system, paid for solely by the parents, would be wildly unequal between cities and neighborhoods.
"Taxes are taken and squandered."
And they wouldn't be under a private system? Inefficiencies in a public system are replaced with profit taking in a private system. The right wing idea that the private sector can solve all our ills is simply unproven by facts or logic.

If 90% of the population believes in a course of action, then there is a very high probability that that's the right course of action for the population. That doesn't prevent anyone from thinking outside the box, or changing the system, as apposed to rigid religious based thinking. Why are we allowed one option for public schools when there are hundreds or cereal choices at the store?! One answer does not cut it for me. Public schools are failing miserably on the Global scale. Is it because of God?...No. But God does give us a moral and value based ground. I am for school uniforms, so the poor kids are not meant to feel less because they shop at a certain store.

carlitosway - Ya, she's a dingbat alright! Her and late husband Ken started a company from one store in Beloit and turned it into a mulit-billion dollar company along with about 30+ other comnpanies she owns. Would you be happier if she pulled out all of her operations from Wisconsin and fired all local employees? Jealousy Breeds Hatred, Which In Turn Breeds Stupidity!
It's not ok for Romney to come to Janesville with a small secret service detail and about 60 police officers to campaign but it's ok for us taxpayers to flip the bill for Obama to travel around the country in a fully loaded Boeing 747, fighter jets, refueling aircraft, communications aircraft, Multiple C-17 cargo planes transporting ground vehicles & helicopters and thousands of secret service detail raising money for his campaign? So tell me, what's the differenct besides Romney's expense is a mere fraction of the cost for Obama to travel?

No cost is too much. (I think that is something I heard from liberals over the election re do).
I did speak to Diane Hendricks, what a gracious woman. I also apologized for all the crude and rude comments that have been made about her, and thanked her for everything she has done for the community.

Every person is an entrepreneur in some way, fashion or form. I actually feel sorry for people who are worshipped for no reason other than their money. Their worshippers are as equally pathetic.

Carlito, why don't you pull your head out of your behind and get a clue. Maybe Diane Hendricks and all of the entrepreneurs in Rock county should pull out and move somewhere else? Would you be happy then?
You need to get a life and a grip on reality.
