I don't know Paul Ryan
News flash! Everyone in Janesville knows Paul Ryan. That's what it seems like if you watch the national news. While I was a year behind him at Craig and I have bumped into him at a few local establishments I don't know him. I've yet to receive a Christmas card so I'm not even a distant acquaintance.
He's been friendly if we stood next to each other at a function, but a nod and a "hi" is about the extent of my 'friendship' with the Congressman. I met with him on official business once and he was busy. It was around the time he unveiled his budget. Aside from the real reason I was there we also discussed Mr. Douglas and the Royal 5 club. He had time for good old Mr. Douglas stories - down to earth.
The last week has been something! It's been interesting to see some of my former Craig classmates get tagged on Facebook through a tmz.com photos or etonline.com. While the photo are all about Paul, I've seen some other faces that look really familiar. Good friends. That's pretty cool.
I can't imagine that Paul will be back in Janesville to walk in the Labor Day parade. It will end an almost decade-long streak of being able to wave at my former classmate. I know he waves right back at me. I'm from Janesville so we should be buddies, right? ;-)
Good luck Paul. While I really don't know you I know you'll make your friends in Janesville proud.
Do you know Paul?

So Steve- when are you retiring your blog? Next June. Just say you are not really. That is all I ask. Don't say you are and then continue. (farvebloggie)

Paul Ryan wins his district with the independent voters. That is the fact.
The nation will soon see why.

here was the article mjoseph. I'm not here to speak of any persons integrity. As we all know, there is hardly any bill passed that doesn't have riders. If you have to vote on a bill as a whole, it shouldn't be judged on its pieces. This article does that.

I will wait here to see your proof that backs up your evidence against Politifact. I am waiting!!! You know and I know, Paul Ryan likes to lie a lot.

I've met the Congressman many times. He is a kind guy and smooth salesman. He is able to make you feel like he agrees with your every view. The best part of the VP nom is we see, in detail, what he really stands for. He is an extremist, that doesn't represent most of the people in the First CD. He isn't a common Republican, but an extremist. Very scary.

cynicaleye - unless you can prove he paid for it on the taxpayer dime, you need to quit beating the dead wine bottle. Think of it as his own personal stimulous package for that microcosm of the economy. Sheesh.

Politifact is a joke. I recently saw where they called a candidates claim that they never voted to raise taxes false. their examples of proof were instances where some went up, some went down, but the net was a tax decrease. that's not raising taxes in my book. Just another biased point of view, which all are. It should be called Politiperception.

Politifact, a Pulitzer-prize winning, nonpartisan watchdog group, knows Paul Ryan, and they say that he rarely tells the truth in his public comments.
According to their recent analysis of 14 public statements that Ryan has made over recent months, they found:
Four were “mostly false.”
Four were “half true.”
Two were “pants on fire” (equal to incredibly false)
Two were “true.”
Two were “mostly true”
That means 10 of his statements were not accurate, and 4 were true or mostly true. Learn more about Politifact’s review of Ryan’s statements at: http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/...

When I got seated at a table next to his group at a local restaurant I thought I might overhear some interesting political stories, instead his buddy recited, word for word, every raunchy "Bob and Tom Show" skit he could think of. I like "Bob and Tom" too, so not judging, just not what I expected is all. I felt uncomfortable for Paul, I'm guessing he was being kind, humoring this guy.

I met him a few time before my soccer team played at Craig the last few years. He seemed like a nice guy at the time, though if we had a political discussion I am sure that might have changed!! :) Whether or not he is a nice guy is not important. He has some extreme ideas for the country while having a history of voting for getting handouts all the time. Nothing more than the flavor of the month. Biden will eat him alive in the debate.

Right on, gbpacker. Knox is clearly associating himself with Paul Ryan at the very same time he is claiming otherwise. Imagine the schizoidal self deception it takes for him to hold two opposing thoughts simultaneously.

yep, this country's problems go way further back than 4 years, and BOTH parties are responsible, but not NEARLY as responsible as WE THE PEOPLE WHO LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT. If you REALLY MUST worship another human being, pick some Hollyweirdo, but educate yourself about your country, its history, and its enemies... and don't be so damn quick to point the finger and yell crazy consipriacy nut..the more I learn, the scarier it gets.

Gun control is a good idea... lets get them out of the hands of the government... after all, if they don't have guns, they don't have a need to spend money on thousands of rounds of ammo.. no, not the army, the social security administration.. yep, mr/ms senior citizen the government is gonna take care of all your problems......

I don't know the man at all. I hope everyone learns what his policy's and politics are. If you inform yourself and earn less then two hundred thousand dollars a year I don't think you will be able to support the man. He may be a nice man that doesn't mean he supports the working man or understands their issues.

I have met and talked with Paul Ryan several times, and had the opportunity to express my views in conversations with him.
Specifically more than once at the ABL plant (Old Accudyne) when he would come for functions.
He would be snubbed by the unions, and not get much friendly conversation. I would spend (15-25) minutes discussing issues and concerns.
I also have had conversations with him in restaurants when I saw him there..and no not while campaigning...
Also at other doings...
Paul is a very fine Gentleman, and seems to be a very nice person too.
I always told him...."Gun Control, Taxes, and Senior Citizens"....as well as "Never forget your roots here in Janesville".
What I have seen over the years is that he no longer remembers what us real people in Janesville are all about, especially seniors, and as far as taxes he has gone blank on that one...Gun Control I don't know, so will not comment...
IMO he is now just another Washington Bureaucrat that is in it for himself...Sad to see this...as I thought he may have been different.

Jnesvillefirst,
I wonder if Janesville will build a Paul Ryan Elementary school before or after the HG school for jealousy? It would be poetic justice for NVgf if Andre Agassi built a wing at his tuition free charter schools based on Ryan and the tenants of Waiting for superman....and the children of those affected by the high harry Reid-Barry Obama unemployment could find a way out and not be dependant on union schools complaining they onbly receive 12300 per pupil per class to fund education....

And hg, I guess Steve cares, but very few of us really don't care what you think about the next Vice President.

Never met Mr. Ryan.. everyone who has - and yes, that does seem like pretty much everyone - says he's a nice guy. I'm willing to believe it.. but here are some facts I DONT like..Paul Ryan on Bailouts and Government Stimuli
Voted YES on TARP (2008)
Voted YES on Economic Stimulus HR 5140 (2008)
Voted YES on $15B bailout for GM and Chrysler. (Dec 2008)
Voted YES on $192B additional anti-recession stimulus spending. (Jul 2009) I believe Mr. Ryan also voted for the NDAA. So, as a conservative, I have doubts about Mr. Ryan, and Mr. Romney. Are they better than the traitor currently in the white house? yes.. are they what this country so desperately needs? No... but then again, what this country needs isn't a different kind of politician.. it needs a different kind of voter..the kind who don't believe the lamestream, left wing, biased media. Oh, and do I like the GAzette? Oh, maybe as much as they like me.. I still have the nasty gram received from Mr. Angus

I do not know him. I met him once three years ago while working as a salesman at Batteries Plus. I was replacing his watch battery one Sunday afternoon, was having trouble putting the cover back on, it was taking a long time. I got a co-worker to help me get it done. Mr. Ryan was very pleasant and very patient. As his views are close to mine, I encouraged him to "go back and stop those guys". He said, "We're gonna try", thanked us and departed.
