— People with no health insurance or prescription coverage now can get help to pay for their medicine thanks to FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards available, at no cost, from United Way of North Rock County.

The cards are made possible through the FamilyWize partnership, 500 other United Way agencies and Alliance partners in America’s Promise in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico.

The cards can be used by everyone in North Rock County who needs medicine and is not covered by insurance, Medicaid or Medicare plans, according to a news release from the local United Way.

The cards, in English and Spanish, have no usage or age limits, income requirements, registration forms or fees and can be used immediately.

Health care—cost of prescriptions and lack of insurance—was listed No. 1 in last year’s countywide needs assessment.

“So we thought this is a simple way to help with the overwhelming cost of prescriptions,” said Gail Graham, president of the local United Way.

Between 15 percent and 25 percent of the population, or one in five people in the United States, have no prescription drug coverage, Graham said.

Plus, she said, more than half of the Hispanic community and employees of small businesses have no coverage. So the card can save a family an average of 20 percent on eight out of 10 prescriptions, Graham said.

Participating pharmacies in north Rock County are:

Edgerton Health Mart Pharmacy, 711 N. Main St.; Evansville Hometown Pharmacy, 21 W. Main St.; Mercy Milton Pharmacy, 725 S. Janesville St.; Janesville locations: CVS Pharmacy at 1832 W. Court St. and 1407 Creston Park Drive; Dean Pharmacy, 580 N. Washington St.; Kmart Pharmacy, 2233 Old Humes Road; Kealey Pharmacy, 21 S. Jackson St.; Mercy East Pharmacy, 3524 E. Milwaukee St.; Mercy Mall Pharmacy, 1010 N. Washington St.; Mercy West Pharmacy, 1000 Mineral Point Avenue; Sam’s Club, 3900 Deerfield Drive; Schnucks Pharmacy, 1501 Creston Park Road; ShopKo Pharmacy, 2500 US Hwy 14; Target, 2017 Humes Road; Wal-Mart, 3800 Deerfield Drive; and Aurora Pharmacy, 2819 N Lexington Drive.

“We hope the entire community will join us in thanking the area pharmacies that have voluntarily agreed to accept the FamilyWize card and provide these savings to the people in need,” Graham said.

It is about time! So many people do not take the much needed medication due to insurance and such. KUDOS to whoever came up with this plan.
