— Thefts from vehicles are the most common property crimes in Janesville, and a theft reported Tuesday morning underlines the advice to not leave valuables in your vehicle and to always lock it.

A 24-year-old Janesville woman who parked her unlocked car in the 2000 block of Sunnyside Street overnight Monday reported that a bank bag with nearly $1,362 intended for deposit at Johnson Bank was stolen, police reported.

Also reported taken were 20 compact discs valued at $300.

It is common sense to lock your car when you leave it in a public place, hell, even in you own driveway or garage. where I go to play hockey, there has been at least 4 car break-ins. i was there when one happened. The Adults did nothing, but the children called the police, a purse was stolen. Seriously, you shouldnt leave vauable items in your car, especially if they are in sight. it could've been a setup too. Idk, hard to say.

She doesn't deposit the money in Johnson Bank's night depository. She doesn't take it into her home with her for overnight. Instead she leaves it in a bank bag and an unlocked vehicle parked outside a structure either on the street or in a driveway.

There's a bad smell about this and I doubt that's gone unnoticed by the authorities investigating it.

I live in Brodhead and have left my truck unlocked (because it's Brodhead) right infront of my place and have actually had change (the only money I keep in it) stolen from my ashtray. Who in their right mind would leave that much money in a vehicle, let alone leave the vehicle unlocked in Janesville? I guess you could forget to lock it but if your intrusted with money why would you leave it in your car? Either it was a set up or she is extremely naive.

Hmmm I also smell the open fish stick box ... how many "friends" were informed that the bag would be there...or.....wow, I guess I really am a cynic...lol. Its just so weird that someone would have that much money in the car and ooops not lock it. Will be interesting to hear the rest of this story.

I've been laughed at by friends because I lock my car everywhere I go. Just goes to show, you can never be too vigilant...I do think though, that this case smells fishier than a box of fishsticks..just my opinion.

Blue, that was the first thing that came to my mind. There are night deposit boxes at every bank for just his reason.

I wouldn't even left an empty bank bag in my car even if it was locked. Wonder what this young lady was thinking?
