Local UAW OKs contract

JANESVILLE — United Auto Workers here fell in line with other UAW locals when they ratified a national contract with General Motors on Wednesday.

Sixty-two percent of Janesville plant workers casting ballots at the union hall supported the contract, which was reached a week ago to end a 40-hour nationwide strike against the automaker.

UAW Local 95 President Mike Sheridan said he was pleased with the results of the vote.

“We had a very large turnout,” Sheridan said of Wednesday’s informational sessions and the subsequent vote.

“I think it was the highest turnout we’ve had for this type of an election.”

Other than the result, UAW Local 95 doesn’t release vote totals.

The Janesville plant is among the first UAW-represented GM facilities to ratify the four-year agreement, which includes new product commitments for several plants, a two-tier wage system for new employees and a trust fund to pay the health care costs of retired workers and
