WCLO's Steve Benton reports a new city ordinance may help reduce truancy

RSS

— The city and school district of Beloit are working together to reduce, or even eliminate truancy.

At a joint meeting Monday, a new city ordinance, which gives police a tool to keep kids in school, was discussed. City Council President, Jim Van De Bogart, says if the truant student and parents cooperate, they can avoid a fine. Van De Bogart says the program has been in place for one year and appears to be working.

135 citations were issued during the last school year. Fines begin at $424, which Van De Bogart says sends a strong message to the parents of students who skip school.
