— The village of Clinton will be taking responsibility of a tax delinquent and possibly contaminated property.

The Rock County Board voted Thursday to hand over responsibility of the lot at 153 Milwaukee St., Clinton. It’s the site of a former gas station and might be contaminated.

The village will refund $1,500 the county paid Clinton for the village’s share of property taxes on the property even though the county collected no taxes on the tax-delinquent parcel between 1996 and 2007, according to the agreement. The village will hold the county harmless in the transaction.

The village got a Brownfield Site Assessment Grant from the state Department of Natural Resources that could pay up to $25,000 to investigate contamination at the lot. The grant requires the village to pay 77 percent of the cost of assessment, Village Administrator Philip Rath said.

So far, the assessment is estimated at $25,000, he said.

The lot is assessed at $100.
