Bryan Gregory, the reigning Player of the Year in Rock Valley boys basketball, took charge for Edgerton High when it mattered most Thursday night.

Gregory, a 6-4 senior, topped off a 33-point peformance with nine in the fourth quarter as the visiting Crimson Tide pulled away from Jefferson for a 53-40 victory in a Rock Valley North opener.

Edgerton, the conference’s defending co-champion, led only 39-35 after three quarters, then put the game out of reach with a 14-5 advantage in the last eight minutes to go 2-0 for the season. Gregory’s dominating effort during that decisive stretch included a 3-for-3 spurt on free throws.

Jefferson, a first-year Rock Valley member, fell to 0-2 for the season, but not before Trevor Probst scored 21 points while keeping the Eagles into contention for three periods.

n Evansville 47, Whitewater 45—Taylor Koch’s three-point basket with just more than a minute to play gave defending conference oc-champion Evansville a lead it did not relinquish in a Rock Valley North opener than was close throughout.

The visiting Whippets took a 22-14 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Blue Devils cut the margin to three by halftime.

Jesse Deininger led the Blue Devils (2-0) with 12 points. Dylan Erickson had 11, and Andrew Keister put in 10.

Miles Hookstead and Tony Bilderback each had 14 points for Whitewater (0-2)

n East Troy 64, McFarland 55—Scott Beckwith hit three three-pointers in the second half to help the visiting Trojans surprise host McFarland in a Rock Valley North opener between new conference members.

Beckwith finished with 20 points. When McFarland pulled to within one in the third quarter, he hit a key three-pointer that put the Trojans in control again.

Mitch Windle added 17 points, and Cody Condon added 10 for East Troy (1-2).

McFarland led 13-8 after one quarter, but could not contain the Trojans’ backcourt. Aaron Dixon had 15 points, Keenen Deer scored 13, and Lucas Schmitz added 12 for McFarland (1-1).

n Clinton 42, Brodhead 41—Nick Oldenburg made the first two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to carry the Cougars past Brodhead in a Rock South opener at Clinton.

Ryan Miller’s free throw lifted Brodhead (1-2) into a 41-41 tie with 29 seconds left. The Cardinals couldn’t connect on a desperation shot after Oldenburg made what proved to be the winning free throw.

Clinton came back from an eight-point deficit to take its first lead since early in the third quarter with two minutes left in the game. Justin Gunderson scored seven of his 15 points for the Cougars in a 15-10 final period that put his team on top for good.

Ryan Cole and Jacob Miller each had 14 points for Brodhead, and teammate J.J. Panoske added 11.

n Parkview 71, Palmyra-Eagle 35—Alex Mumm scored all 27 of his points in the first three quarters as Parkview (2-0) dominated Palmyra-Eagle (1-2) in a Rock Valley South opener at Orfordville.

Mumm, a 6-5 senior, had an 18-point first half in pacing Parkview to a 31-13 lead. He added nine more in the third quarter as the Vikings stretched their advantage to 52-25.

Nobody else scored in double figures for Parkview, which played without star guard Nick Melton.

Chris McMillan had 11 points for Palmyra-Eagle.

n Big Foot 48, Turner 34—Big Foot (2-0) used six three-point goals to break open a tight Rock Valley South opener at Walworth.

The Chiefs’ surge of three-pointers came late in the second quarter and early in the third, helping them build a 25-19 halftime lead and extend it to 39-24 by the end of the third period.

Michael Schauf, a 6-1 junior, had three of Big Foot’s three-pointers, and 6-5 senior Michael Spadoni added two. Spadoni finished with a game-high 15 points, and Schauf had 11, while Mike Jacobs led Turner (1-1) with 13.
