The City of Janesville is looking for ways to cut the snow plowing budget for the rest of the year.
Public Works Director Jack Messer tells WCLO's Stan Milam Show, its because the 2007-2008 snow plowing season was the worst on record, and the budget has been exhausted. He says a plan is in place to limit plowing as much as safely possible. During the first snow storm of this season, most residential streets weren't plowed.
Messer says when the New Year arrives, they'll be able to review the situation and hopefully develop a new plan.

you would think they would plow then spread the salt?

I don't understand why, when they piggyback the plows, the first truck is spreading the salt mixture and the second truck plows it away. There's no way that mixture has time to do any good in 20 seconds.

gazettereader: You're probaly right!! Too bad we can't read their minds, we'd know when to take our cars off the road. right now we are at the whim of when the city chooses to do their job we have already paid our taxes for them to do. Good luck everyone, keep safe on our treacherous city streets!

whoanellie that is probably how they determine which streets to plow, whichever have the most opportunity for revenue.

What does Beloit do differently than Jvl because Beloit's streets have been plowed during both storms this past week (even side streets). Jvl didn't plow for several storms last winter either. Where is the money going??
Way to go Beloit!!

Don't tell me our street will be worse than any other year!!!! They don't plow our street very often as it is! but they will be quick to give out those tickets for not getting your car off the street when they do decide to plow! How are we to know when they will and when they won't?? We are just at the mercy of when they want to do their job.YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WOORK!!!!!

I can understand maybe not putting salt down- but at least getting the snow off the roads would have helped. My street is all ice now because it was packed down.
Those that plow for the city- when it isn't snowing what do they normally do and is just plowing that much more expensive that what they would otherwise be doing? I realize gas will play into that, but just wondering is it the act of plowing or the salt that costs

Just like Janesville to rather save a buck then to save lives. Wonder how many accidents there were because of this snow? WAY TO GO!

It was obvious this morning that there was a cutback. As soon as I left the city roads were great.
