Janesville digging out after snowstorm

By GAZETTE STAFF   Friday, Dec. 19, 2008

— The forecast was daunting enough to close the schools.

It wasn't enough, however, to close the Janesville Mall.

Not this weekend, anyway.

This historically is the busiest shopping weekend of the year, and the Janesville Mall planned to be open until 10 tonight, as usual, General Manager Jodi Coyer said.

"If we would have gotten this (storm) in January or February, we might have made a different call," Coyer said. "But with this weekend, absolutely these retailers need to hang on to everything they can this holiday season."

About 9 inches of snow had fallen on Janesville by 7 a.m. today, but Coyer expected the mall to be running at full steam by noon, although a few of the small stores were slow opening this morning, she said.

"My staff has gotten here OK," Coyer said. "Some come from as far as Rockford. But it's just kind of what we do."

What's next?

Chris Franks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sullivan, said we can expect more snow late Saturday night and Sunday morning.

"But compared to this storm, it's not going to be anything close," he said.

Franks said the weather service is predicting 1 to 3 inches of light snow over the weekend.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s today and tomorrow, but after the snow moves out of the area Sunday, temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits, he said.

The next chance of snow could be Tuesday.

Safe on the roads

The Rock County Sheriff's Office reported no accidents after the snow started around midnight and only a few runoffs.

Traffic was light this morning. People apparently were heeding warnings to stay home, sheriff's Lt. Gary Groelle said.

The heavy snowfall was expected to end by noon, giving plow crews a chance to catch up, Groelle said.

The bad news was wind gusting to 30 mph, which was expected to continue to blow drifts across rural roads, Groelle said.

The sheriff's office was at Level 2 of its three-level snow emergency plan today. Groelle said he didn't expect to see Level 1, the most serious stage.

Groelle checked with snowmobile clubs Thursday to make sure they would be ready to bring aid to stranded motorists, and club officials said they would be available. But they weren't needed as of 8 a.m. today.

A Level 1 response would be triggered by 12 inches of snow, or by other weather conditions that put people in danger.

Snow day payback

This is the second snow day this school year for the Janesville public schools. The day off lengthens winter break by a day, but teachers and students will have to make it up later in the school year.

Only one snow day is allowed without a makeup day. Superintendent Tom Evert said he's considering different possibilities but he first needs to consult with the teachers union president, Sam Loizzo, and the school board.

Hotline ready

A new hotline for Wisconsin road information was ready to go just in time for the storm.

The 511 Traveler Information System replaces the state Transportation Department's 1-800 ROAD WIS line.

Wisconsin transportation officials say the 511 system offers 267 lines, five times as many as the old system. Expansion plans call for 1,000 lines, which the department says would eliminate busy signals.

The 511 system uses voice recognition software to prompt callers through a list of options providing information on traffic incidents and road conditions. It also offers information on buses, trains, ferries, and taxis.

i go out plowing(not a city driver or county) and i go slow and had no problems. i had to drive to get there and no problems. stop whining!!! also my kids are not going an extra day at the end of the year because the school district should have put more snow days into the schedule, especially after last year

Get ready everyone, get out your violins. We are all going to have to be ready to play a song of sorrow for the whiners after our next snowfall.....tomorrow morning aught to be interesting again about how the plow drivers didn't plow. BUT let's not forget, there is a city ordinance that a city WILL NOT plow until a certian amount of snow or criteria is met. I can't quote what that is, but most cities it is 3" or more warrant plowing. So, unless you are going to plow yourself, and we don't get a sizeable amount of snow, I suggest you spare your ticker some stress, and don't expect it. High expectations only lead to disapointment. ;)

Thank you city plow drivers for the 20 hours of non-stop plowing. I also want to thank the city workers union for there generosity of donating $1000 to local charity. These workers not only keep you safe but also have a heart in giving back to those who are unfortunate. Thanks again DPW employees.

Woohoo....I am so glad that there are other PRO-snow plowers. Yes, they did an excellent job. Our road which is a way way out in the backwoods side road was even plowed by afternoon. I really didn't expect them to get to us until late, and I wasn't concerned....but pleasantly surprised that they were able to make it out here so early.

Thank God the mall opened up.

The people that left their cars in the road are going to have one heck of a time digging them out. No need to ticket them, they have been punished enough..:)

I commend the plows (and their management) this time. It seemed like they were out on the streets when and where they needed to be this time.

I could care less if my road is last - I don't live on a busy street. But the streets that needed it - were well cared for.

I actually enjoyed my day, baked cookies, had my WHOLE family home with me, had a fire and just hung out....I think most of these people that complain must have been picked on by the neighborhood bully as children. They think everyone is out to get them.

I just think you all just need to get off the pity potty and choose your battles. Is this really going to matter in ten years? Nope. Not goona effect your life in the least. And if someone's life is taken because of an 'unplowed' road, that is unfortuneate, but ultimately it is one's own decision as to how important their own safety is......10 - 12 inches of snow is not considered safe to drive in. Period. I don't care if your the president. Your little black treads should not leave your residence until the weather permits. I don't know about you, but my oxygen intake is more important than any amount of coin.

Maybe they're plowing those roads twice that people don't think should be plowed twice because it's just the way the plowing pattern goes? Maybe they're doing it twice just to get to the next section? Heck, I don't know how they do it, they just do it somehow.

to quote myself "for those of us that had no choice but to go out TO GO TO WORK because the management decided NOT TO CLOSE THE FACILITY, then it was a matter of putting our safety on the line so that we, much like the plow drivers, could make an honest living and pay the bills..." I'm well aware of the fact that they are only doing it as a job, however, why is it that it's allowed for "other roads (that aren't apart of the main drag, a part of the bus route, or a main artery for the city) to be plowed twice... yes, a residential road to many may not qualify to many as imperative enough to plow for the City of Janesville, but why is it then that there are quite a few roads that don't hold a major association to the reasoning afformentioned in recently past articles in conjunction to what roads are considered "priorities" (legitimately so)... however, all the main roads, in the meantime, have been cleared prior to my having to venture out (to work)...
.
I'm not discrediting anyone who drive plow, but I'm looking at it as the City of Janesville needs to reevaluate their priorities... many residental roads are getting hit twice prior to those that remain under snow and ice until they (the "City") deem it necessary to plow them out... it is because of that factor that many of us wind up missing work...

Ok, not to be mean by calling all you people who complain about plow drivers, idiots...but have YOU NOT listened to the news this year. They have made it exceptionally CLEAR that side roads and residential roads WILL NOT be touched until the main roads are clear, beacause of all the whining last year. And if you can't figure out why this would be, then you don't deserve your road plowed at all. Seriously, get a clue. I realize that there will always be those thorns out there that have to needle everyone, but I am quite certain the plow drivers don't have a list of who's been naughty or nice, and plows the streets accordingly.....your a bunch of goofballs.

My beef with the snow-plowing is that they seem to leave snow on the road -- like on Milton Avenue after what was a fairly small snow fall. Was that because it plummeted after the last snowfall? I just don't get why they leave so much?

the school district is not entirely to blame for the amount of snow days built in. From 1996 through 2006 I believe the district had a total of 2 snow days. (This is what I remember, could be a little more) There was no reason to build more into the calender. Also, the schedule is decided a few years in advance. I don' know if they can change it or not, but if they can't any changes they make won't take affect for a few more years.

marge123: it's not a matter of who gets plowed first or last... it's a matter of a few streets that aren't main drags, on/apart of bus routes, or arteries to the afformentioned getting hit at least twice prior to any other streets being done... it's nothing against your husband by any means, for he's only doing his job... just figure that in the amount of time it takes to go over streets 2-3x that aren't an integral part of what the city claims it's doing, don't you think your street, much like others in the community would've been done by now??

Anyone remember the 'blizzard' of 1979? I believe we didn't have school for about a week. I've never once had to go to school past the usual end of school date. I guess the school district from my home town must have had more common sense and better planning.

to me, it doesn't make any sense to only allow for one snow day a year... bad enough, we, along with some friends of ours, are still waiting for the plows to come down our street, when my mother-in-law's street (not a major road) has been plowed twice already since the storm hit... so much for efficiency...

gabby06 - one of the articles in the Gazette last spring about the Saturday makeup days mentioned that the school district was asked if they were going to build extra days into the 2008-2009 school year in case the snow days pile up (pun intended) again this year. The district official (I don't recall who it was) said no because the school district never has multiple snow days in a year. They were certain it wouldn't happen again. Hmmmm...guess they got caught with their pants down, huh?

2. go suck eggs, it's not really about the kids or education, it's about protecting union members
