Snowfall on the verge of city record

— If you're dreaming of a white Christmas, please stop.

As of 7 a.m. today, Janesville has had 33.37 inches of snow, according to the city's wastewater treatment plant. That includes the 1.2 inches of snow that fell overnight.

December's total snowfall was reported incorrectly in Monday's Gazette.

The snowfall by 7 a.m. brought the city within 1.85 inches of the record total for December since 1948, when the Gazette started keeping weather records. In first place is 2000, when Janesville got 35.22 inches in December.

It won't get any better soon.

Here's what to expect in the next few days, according to the National Weather Service in Sullivan:

Today: A winter weather advisory remains in effect until midnight. Periods of snow will result in 3 to 5 inches of accumulation by this evening.

Late tonight: A winter storm warning will take over weather duties.

Wednesday: Warmer and moister air pushes north into our region, making snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches possible. Brisk north to northwest winds will bring blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility.

Hey, I don't live here by choice. I live here because I love my husband! I would never choose to live in WI on purpose! I would rather have AZ or CA for the nice warm and sunshine most of the year! But, alas, I love my Wi bound husband so excuse me if I complain about the wicked weather we're having. And no snowplowing!!!! my street hasn't been plowed but once this season, and I'm off a main drag!!!!

I'm on crutches (again) just like last winter... Something about me ice skating on my kitchen tile like I'm trying out for the Olympics.... Not good.

Nina: Thanks for posting my exact thoughts. I remain here because my 87-year-old mother lives in Beloit and my five siblings and families all live in different states. I would not give up my time with her for anything. Plus, my lack of love for winter weather increases slowly with each passing year. I think that happens to many of us as we get older. The colder temperatures, snow and ice make it more difficult to trudge our ways to our cars, in and out of stores, to gas pumps, etc. Luluberryberry _0981, I will put a betting dollar on your agreeing with my thoughts some 40 or 50 years from now when you are struggling to get around with a cane, two canes or a walker. I never thought I would need a cane to stabilize my balance, but I thank God for the thing (even if it is insulting to need it already at age 50). I used to love winter: a white Christmas, walking through snow-covered streets, ice skating OUTSIDE, sledding, making snow angels, getting into snowball fights, cutting down my own Christmas tree in the woods on my grandfather's farm, and making snowmen and igloos with my nieces and nephews. I wish it were still that way, but please try to understand that some of us struggle in this season. Look me up in another 50 years, Luluberry. I hope you still love winter and still live in our beautiful state, but I will understand if you have become a snowbird and moved elsewhere for the season. P.S. Merry Christmas, everyone! Have a safe and happy holiday.

I am certainly not a snow fan, but I get it that I live in Wisconsin and that it is going to snow and be cold - I live here only because ALL my family is here and I love them much more than I detest, despise, and loathe the snow. BUT with that being said, I want the AVERAGE Wisconsin winter - not the record-breaking ones! AVERAGE winter for here - at least according to local TV networks - is about 8 or 9 inches for the month of December and a 50/50 chance of a white Christmas. I want AVERAGE!!!! I am not asking for 70 and sun (though I would certainly take it), I just can't stand having more snow than some parts of Alaska and colder temps than parts of Canada! And I don't really care if I am whining! :) Have a wonderful and SAFE holiday everyone!

Thanks for the Chist...sorry, Holiday cheer, Cathy.

This is Wisconsin, people. What do you expect? I think that we as Midwesterners were spoiled for the few years prior to last year with the mild winters we had. And if I remember correctly, last year we had a January thaw that reduced most of the snow cover and then we got hit again. Remember the big pile up in Madison caused by the fog from the warm air and the cold snowy ground? Let's hope that something like that does not happen again.

Okay, I can hang on for two months. Three months, however, is questionable.

I apologize in advance if I back into anyone pulling out of my driveway on E. Milwaukee. I can't see past Mt Everest to my left and Mt McKinley to my right. Anyone who interested in climbing, there is a small fee to cover maintenance cost (otherwise known as saving for a two stage snow thrower).

Yet our city official's plan for removing this snow, coming off a terrible winter last year, was to basically pretend the snow isn't there and maybe the city residents won't know it's there either. Note to City Hall: Maybe the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil works inside the walls of city hall, but trust me folks, if you're listening, and to this point I have no reason to believe you are, it don't work on my street.
