Lions make history with winless season

— GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Detroit Lions own a distinction no team wants: worst in NFL history.

Facing one last chance to avoid their dubious destiny, the Lions lost Sunday’s season finale to the Green Bay Packers 31-21 to complete the league’s first 0-16 season. The 1976 expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-14) were the last NFL team to complete a season without a victory.

It didn’t come without a fight. After falling behind 24-14 midway through the fourth quarter, Kevin Smith’s 9-yard touchdown run put Detroit back within a field goal.

But Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Donald Driver and the Lions’ Dan Orlovsky threw an interception on fourth-and-27 with 3 minutes left, dooming Detroit to futility of historic proportion.

“No competitor wants to go through something like this,” said Lions coach Rod Marinelli, who declined to discuss his future with the team. “This is not fun to go through, obviously. But there’s people going through a lot worse than this.”

The Lions were building toward this for years and now have lost 23 of their last 24 games. The 0-16 record will be a lasting testimony to the Matt Millen era. With Millen as president of the team from 2001 until he was fired on Sept. 24, Detroit won only 31 games — none this year, of course.

“It can’t do anything but motivate you,” Orlovsky said. “I don’t ever want to be a part of this again. We haven’t won since, November of ’07, maybe? I don’t even know the last time we won a game.”

The Lions haven’t won since Dec. 23, 2007, when they beat Kansas City. Green Bay is where this woeful streak began at the end of last season. Since then, the Lions have lost 17 straight and have been outscored 551-281.

Marinelli has gone 10-38 in three seasons. His future has not been announced, but team owner William Clay Ford has decided the leaders of the front office, Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand, will be back in some capacity.

“I am positive that every aspect of what we do as a football team has to be rethought and analyzed,” veteran kicker Jason Hanson said.

Orlovsky was 22-of-42 for 225 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Lions, whose bid to stay out of the record book came undone in large part due to a pair of ill-advised penalties.

Rodgers was 21-of-31 for 308 yards and three touchdowns for the Packers (6-10), and Ryan Grant and DeShawn Wynn rushed for 106 yards each.

Trailing 14-7 early in the third quarter, Lions punter Nick Harris pinned the Packers at their 10-yard line. Safety Kalvin Pearson then put a hard hit on Grant to cause a fumble, and recovered the ball at the Packers 11.

Calvin Johnson caught a pass from Orlovsky in the flat and broke three tackling attempts to score a tying 14-yard touchdown with 10:20 left in the third quarter.

But the Packers put together a 12-play, 62-yard drive for a 36-yard field goal by Mason Crosby. After a three-and-out by Detroit’s offense, Lions linebacker Ernie Sims’ penalty for a late hit out of bounds on Grant played a key role on a drive that ended with a 5-yard pass from Rodgers to fullback John Kuhn.

The Lions weren’t finished, as Orlovsky used two long completions to John Standeford to set up Smith’s touchdown with 8:34 left. After the ensuing kickoff, Rodgers reared back and threw deep to Driver, who blew past Lions cornerback Leigh Bodden and ran in for a touchdown.

Orlovsky led the Lions back into Packers territory, but a taunting penalty on Smith moved the Lions back near midfield and Orlovsky threw an interception to Nick Collins.

Detroit fell behind 14-0 as Orlovsky managed a measly 9 yards passing in the first quarter. But the Lions’ defense showed some fight early on before allowing Wynn to score on a 73-yard touchdown.

Rodgers also threw a fade to rookie tight end Jermichael Finley in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.

Detroit scored early in the second quarter, a 9-yard touchdown from Orlovsky to Johnson on third-and-goal.

Way to go Pennington and the Dolphins. I am a Bears fan and hate to admit this, but the Pack got it right. Nice choice to dump Favre for Rodgers. The Packers were twice ready to bring Favre back, both times he said no. Then he wanted back??? They needed to move forward, Rodgers did well (over 90 QB rating) to earn an extension. Now you spoiled Packer fans get another very good and young QB for years to come and we still have the revolving door at that position.

Shut up and blame someone other than Rodgers for your 5 win season

JCK Ted Thompson sucked as a GM in Seattle. And we got his services.

SarahB: Just sooooooo tired of everyone drinking the Favre koolaid. He is no longer a good quarterback...and won't be again. He was great once, years ago, but he has not been a good playoff quarterback for years. The fact that he is in the pro bowl with 22 tds (6 in one game against Arizona) and 22 picks when Phillip Rivers is not when he has 700 more yards, 34 tds and 11 picks shows just how silly the media is over the old fool. As much as I don't care for Thompson I am glad he had the courage to dump Favre before the season began. If Favre's crappy performance the past 5 weeks was due to injury, he should have had the brains to get out of the way rather than costing his team a playoff berth. By the way, that final sentence was just a little tongue in cheek - sorry it went past you.

Man my old Detroit sure has had it rough in sports. We have had the Millen GM disaster for 5 years of complete failure.
We had the greatest running back in history, and only made the playoffs a couple times.
Our baseball team was a total let down last year. The year we made the series, our pitchers could not make a throw to any base accurately. Only bright spot has been my Pistons, and even they seem to be fading off now.
Oh yeah, we have the Red WIngs, haha..Who really cares about hockey though?
.
Oh and I should put out a congrats to kiowamohican (the poster on here). The "ex" book/professional gambler/husstler, w/e you want to call him, haha.He popped up on a different blog and claimed with the Lions at +11.5 he was flying to Vegas Sat night with just two suit cases packed. One would be stuffed full of $,the other empty. and that he'd be coming back the next day with both stuffed full of bling, hahaha. Hope you hired a couple goons for ya when you got off that plane in ohare!

The savior went to New York but it was the head coach who got crucified! Now the New York faithful have to go through months of speculation, waiting and indecision as the almighty one decides whether or not he wants to play again next year. Maybe he will be released and can go to Minnesota so he can dethrone that team as division champs.,.as Packer fans we can only hope so. The Jets went 8-3 before Favre threw 2 tds and 9 picks in his final 5 games. Injured or not that is a horrible performance that has generally been reserved for Packers playoff losses the past several years.

The future is much brighter in Green Bay where we can get some bodies healthy, address several needs in free agency (not likely with Teddy at the helm) and the draft. Any chance Favre threw in the towel five weeks ago just to keep the Packers from getting a second round pick? Hmmmm - he is one bitter old fool.

Why is it always all about the QB? His line has nothing to do with it right? What about the fact that we're the youngest team in the league? What about the Injuries?
I love Favre to death, but he's already questioning his career. For a first year QB Rodgers did great. We are the best team in the NFL with a 6-10 record.
I agree SarahB.

Holmgren was an abysmal failure as the GM in Seattle. There is little reason to believe he would fare any better in Green Bay.

fairandbalanced- I don't think shutupandfish was saying that Rodgers is going to be the next Brett Favre. Heck, we may never see another one like him. The stats just pointed out what they both did in their first year as starting QB's. I think the season took a toll on Brett he's 39 years old and took some big hits throughout the year. Your not going to be what you once were when your body ages.

fairandbalanced-I stand corrected.

As for Holmgren coming back, I think it would be a disaster without Favre and Ron Wolf there with him.

It may have been Rodgers first year at the helm, but it was not his first year as a Packer. He had four seasons to learn the Packers' system; Favre had only a week or so to familarize himself with the Jets' program. Plus, I don't believe New York used his talents properly. And, before you completely trash him, I think we should see what today's MRI shows re: his shoulder. There is absolutely no way anyone goes from great to mediocre in just a few games without something seriously being wrong physically. Aging does not work that way. It is a chronic, slow-developing process. He has something "acute" going on ... at least in my opinion. Personally, I hope the Packers hang on to the two big bozos (Thompson/McCarthy) one more season. If they don't straighten out their mess, then dump them and lure Holmgren back to be the GM.

Brett Favre has left a team out of the playoffs (with a god awful performance over the past five games) and in total disaray when it comes to making plans for next year. I for one am just glad that its not the Packers. The "more wins" argument means nothing. Neither team is playing in the Postseason but Green Bay will be returning a young QB who finished in the top six in the NFL in Rating, Yards and TD's while throwing twice as many TD's as INT's while the Jets must decide if they have any interest in the 21st ranked QB an aging former superstar who led the league in INT's or find a way to upgrade from their current backup, Kellen Clements.

tjncj, there is a post about first year stats by shutupandfish. He compared the QB ratings and stats of both of them. To say that Rodgers future looks bright because his 1st year stats were better than Favre's, implying comparison to a lengendary career, is just stretching the bounds of common sense.

We all hope that Rodgers improves and matures, as he is in the position of leading the team.

The Pack's defense made plays last year in the fourth quarter. They were the 11th best defense in the league last year.

Between key injuries, boneheaded personnel moves and an inability to stop anyone in the fourth quarter, the Packers' defense dropped to 27th overall this year. When a defense tanks 16 spots, you won't win as many games pure and simple whether you have Favre or Rodgers at QB.

The offense had a QB with 4000 yards, 28 tds and only 13 picks, a 1200 yard running back and two 1000 yard receivers. The offense was pretty good despite an awful offensive line and had the team in a position to win several games that the D gave away in the final seconds.

Thompson sucks at drafting quality players but ridding the franchise of the washed up legend was a good move in hindsight.

Rodgers may or may not be around in eight years, but Favre is done now. Personally I like the way he plays and he should only get better. The Jets went 1-4 down the stretch and Favre had 1 TD and 9 interceptions.

No one compared Rodgers with Favre's career, only who did better this year.

Thompson and McCarthy have got to go-that's the bottom line. These 2 bozos have divided the fans, lied to everybody and left us with a mediocre team at best. I am tired of hearing the comparison between Favre and Rodgers. Who in their right mind would look at first year stats and say or imply that Rodgers is a better QB or will be better that Favre? If Rodgers is around in 8 years, I'd be surprised.

"Rogers may have more yardage, but Brett has more wins.."

At this point, I don't know how anyone could seriously think Favre would have been better than Rodgers this year for the Packers. Now the Jets get to play the waiting game. I won't miss that next year.

'The Packers this year also lost seven games by a total of 19 points.'

Yes so many close games. It makes many ask what if?? But NO team has a winning season every year. Just look at the Patriots, staying home with the Packers, Bears, Jetts , Minnesota will join them after Sunday,, the Eagles will smack them around just a little.

We all need to look at the stats from when Favre was starting his first year and Rodgers his first year. Favre had 18 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions his QB rating was 85.3. Rodgers had 28 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions his qb rating for the year was 93.8. The future for Rodgers looks good.

Rogers had a lot to learn and he got the opportunity. The main reason the Jets had more wins was because they had the better defense. Would Brett have gotten us more wins....maybe one or two but we will still be on the outside looking in at the playoffs and would have lost the opportunity to let Rodgers play. The Packers have made few correct personell choices but trading Favre was one of them. The Justin Harrell, John Ryan, etc. moves should get TT the pink slip.

Rogers may have more yardage, but Brett has more wins.. Why? Because he knows how to finish games. When D.D. went in for the t.d. in the fourth quarter did you see Rodgers?? he looked like a kid on Christmas day,, the look of finally something goes right in the fourth .. It was ours to lose and they finally finished a game. I am hoping Rogdgers matures over the off season and becomes more of a leader that besides a defense is really what we were missing.

Yes I think we would all take the Jetts record over our own.. But I am sure the Jetts would take Tennessee's record over theirs. WE could play that game all day. Fire TED Thompson we are better off with Favre than without.

What happened to the Bears?? All the big talk last week from those Bears fans...

Well the Jets collapse is complete. The final numbers for Farve and Rogers aren't even close.

The bottom line is neither made the playoffs and we have a good QB who is ready to play for years to come.

Rodgers 4000 plus yards 28 TD's 13 INT's.

*********

Farve 3480 yards 22 TD's 22 INT's.
