Jan Egeland

— A diplomat whom Time magazine called “the world’s conscience” is the 2008 Weissberg Professor of International Studies at Beloit College.

Jan Egeland, a former under-secretary general of the United Nations for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, will share his experiences and views in a series of meetings, classes, public lectures and panel discussions from March 30 to April 6.

Egeland, currently the director general of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, served as head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance from 2003-2006.

Egeland will deliver the annual Marvin Weissberg Lecture at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Moore Lounge, in Pearsons Hall. His talk is titled “Progress and Setbacks at Humanity’s Frontlines” and will reflect his experiences, as chronicled in his new book, “At the Front Lines of Humanity.”

On Saturday, April 5, Egeland will join scholars and diplomats in a program titled “Responding to Humanitarian Emergencies” at 1 p.m. in the Moore Lounge in Pearsons Hall. A calendar of related events will be posted closer to that date at www.beloit.edu.
