Local individuals and businesses have contributed tens of thousands of dollars to two branches of the United Way in Walworth County to reach about half of their annual fund-raising goals.

The United Way of Delavan-Darien is 60 percent of the way to its $165,000 mark.

“We started out a little slow, but I think we’re pretty much on pace now, though,” said Joe Peyer, chairman of the fund drive. “We can always use more.”

The Geneva Lakes Area United Way is at about 50 percent of its $60,000 goal.

Although “fairly well on track,” an 18,000-home mailing in March should “help get us most of the way there,” said treasurer Jon Chamberlain.

The Delavan-Darien branch of the United Way has approved about 25 agencies to receive funds. The Geneva Lakes Area United Way has about 20 agencies lined up.

Peyer said the Delavan-Darien branch receives donations from individuals and corporations alike. Chamberlain said payroll deductions account for many of the donations to the Geneva Lakes Area branch.

The organizations began their annual fund drives in October, and fund raising should wrap up by April.

About 95 percent of the money raised through the annual fund drive goes directly to local agencies.
