— The Walworth County Coroner’s Office identified the 9-year-old victim in a drowning in the city’s Mill Pond on Thursday.

Authorities believe Brent L. Aldrich was walking to Washington Elementary School when he ventured onto the ice and either fell through or went in into an open area near the dam, Chief Deputy Coroner Thomas F. Miller said.

The cause of death is accidental drowning, Miller said.

Police found him along the shore about 4:45 p.m. near the dam along Main Street. He was pronounced dead at Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services.

Brent was a third-grader who loved sports, especially football. He wanted to be a quarterback like his idol, Brett Favre, according to his obituary.

Private services will be held Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Whitewater. Memorials may be made to the family. Olsen Funeral Home is assisting.
