— Two Walworth County sheriff’s deputies on Monday fatally shot a man suspected of beating his daughter’s mother in Kenosha, kidnapping the girl and threatening her with a shotgun after a police chase.

Antonio J. Torres, 41, Zion, Ill., was wanted in Kenosha for abducting his 1-year-old daughter, Liliana J. Torres, and beating the girl’s 32-year-old mother earlier in the day, Kenosha Police Sgt. Hugh Rafferty said.

Antonio Torres was spotted hours later in Walworth County and led deputies on a high-speed chase with his daughter in the vehicle, Walworth County Sheriff’s Capt. Jay Maritz said.

Torres was shot and killed after stopping along County H near Pell Lake and making “life-threatening gestures toward the child,” Maritz said.

“He pointed the gun at the girl,” Walworth County Sheriff David Graves said. “From what I understand, preliminarily, there were two rounds fired” by two deputies.

The girl was uninjured and reunited with her mother at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn.

Torres called Kenosha police at 11 a.m. Monday and told a dispatcher that he had beaten a woman, Rafferty said.

Torres and the woman have a 1-year-old daughter together, according to Kenosha police.

Torres abducted the girl and took her with him after the assault, Rafferty said.

When police arrived, the woman was shaken up and injured, but Torres and the girl were not around, according to Kenosha police. The woman was taken to a Kenosha hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Torres later called the house and spoke with an officer, according to Kenosha police. He asked about the woman.

An officer asked Torres to return to the home, but Torres refused, Rafferty said.

Torres told the officer that the next time police saw him and his daughter that they would have been shot, according to Kenosha police.

Torres then hung up the phone, Rafferty said.

An Amber Alert was issued, and authorities statewide were searching for Torres, he said.

Torres was driving a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer and possibly was on his way to Illinois, where he has family, according to Kenosha police.

Four hours later, an off-duty Walworth County sheriff’s deputy spotted Torres’ vehicle driving along Highway 50 on the east side of Walworth County, Maritz said.

The deputy called for backup and a pursuit began, Maritz said.

Several patrol vehicles from different agencies chased Torres for 20 minutes at high speed, and Torres flashed a gun during the pursuit, he said.

Torres pulled over on County H near Pell Lake and brandished his gun, Maritz said.

Deputies shot Torres to protect the child, he said, and Torres died at the scene.

The girl was taken to the Elkhorn hospital but was not injured, Maritz said.

“We’re pleased that the child was recovered safely,” he said.

The girl’s mother picked her up at about 6 p.m. She didn’t speak with members of the media waiting outside the hospital.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.

The deputies involved in the shooting were scheduled to meet with a psychologist, Graves said.

“I think they did an outstanding job,” Graves said. “In my opinion, they saved that child’s life. They were given no other choice.”

Investigators closed County H south of Pell Lake from 3 p.m. until at least 11 p.m. after the shooting. Yellow police tape surrounded the shooting scene. The crime scene investigation vehicle was there.

According to court records, Torres in 1998 was charged with kidnapping in Kenosha County.

He was later convicted of battery, burglary, threats to injure and criminal trespass to a dwelling. The kidnapping charge was dropped.

The last time a Walworth County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man was two years ago in Delavan, Graves said. In that incident, the suspect shot his girlfriend and took her hostage.

Gazette...Mymaro and Nutty need to be removed from your system to allow comments. Neither have a clue on police work and what these fine men and women go through in situations like this. I know the officers involved in this incident and ALL of them are top-notch including the officers from Bloomfield Twsp!! Without officers like this...."willing to face these types of people head-on" and willingness to "take the shot" where would our society be? Way to go...and Job Well done Walworth County Sheriff, Bloomfield, and Genoa City. Proud to be a resident of Walworth County!!

NURSE4U ~~~First of all I would like to apologize to ANY woman I may have offended. I do feel like I have a right to the comment I wrote though, I grew up with a mother who was beaten and allowed the jackass beat me for YEARS. Granted all situations are not BLACK and WHITE, I understand that, but it all starts with accepting that FIRST abuse, whether it be controlling behavoir, a little tug on the arm, isolation from the woman's family and friend's....etc. THis to most woman with low self esteem is "flattering" being they must really "love" them if they want them so much to themselves. WHereas, a person with logical cognitive thinking would be aware of the red flags and get the heck out. Things NEVER get better, they only get worse, and at the first sign of control, abuse or whatever....get out! Believe in yourself, and know you are worth more than that. I am educated the best way, I HAVE LIVED IT and have CHOSEN to NEVER allow ANY MAN belittle me or raise a hand or voice to me. I demand respect as well as give it. So, yes, I do know these situations BEGIN with a man scouting out a woman he can control....these men can smell these woman miles away.

Those officers did exactly what they should have done. Anyone in todays world, who's willing to pin on that badge, & holster a side arm to defend innocent people from scum (i.e. Antonio J. Torres & people like him), deserve a lot better then what they get. My nephew just graduated from the Academy, & it amazes me what Officers have to be concerned about when pulling the trigger. I think when its a slam dunk case like this one, the officers should be given a parade, not desk duty or time off.

ok people need to grow up the police did what needed to be done and the save a little girl. and for mymaro what your probblem with JPD i think that your probblem is that you were one of the kids growing up that was always in trouble and got caught all the time and that why you hate them so think of it this way if that was your kid and someone did that wouldnt you want that person to pay i know i would i think then did a very good job. and for optimism there are women out there that are scared for there lifes and there children if then have any the probblem is that there are guys out there that think that then need to be in total control of the relationship and when they cant be they dont like it and flip out these are the kind of guys that need lots of help.

I hope I didn't sound like I was blaming her for what happened. I understand what she was going through and how hard it may have been to end a bad relationship especially if she had been threatened. It's not so easy to "walk away" when you are dealing with an unrational or potentially dangerous person (which it appears Torres was). I used to talk trash about women who stayed with abusive men until I realized how scared they are to leave; when someone threatens to kill you getting a restraining order does nothing to protect you and even if they spend a night or two in jail they have ways to "get to you" and sometimes it's worse when they get out. Let's not blame her but wish her the best.

Optimism-
This woman with "low self-esteem" had employment as a day care provider. She had left Mr. Torres a month ago, and he wouldn't take "No more," for an answer. She stood up to him, and he hit her, causing her to black out. THEN he kidnapped her and threatened to kill their 1 year old daughter.
DOESN'T ANYONE REMEMBER THE TRADEGY IN DELAVAN WHERE 7 PEOPLE WERE MURDERED, INCLUDING INNOCENT TWINS???
I commend the police for their swift decisive action. Domestic Violence should NEVER be taken lightly.

The trouble is that too many shows such as CSI solve the problems in 1 hour & people now think that real life cases should do the same. In real life, the police have to cross every "T" & dot every "I" just right to make sure that shyster lawyer does't get the person off on some technicality.

In this case the problem is solved & the only thing that can be done is to bury the fellow while some people wring their hands & cry about how terrible this was that it happened to him

optimism as much as I agree with you about women putting up with abuse due to low self esteem (I was there myself in my 20's) we need to remember that alot of times these men control their women with threats. Most can't leave as much as they want to since they believe their "man" will kill her if they leave. Getting a restraining order is useless! This guy not only threatened but could have followed through with killing his own daughter. Thank God the police did the right thing and ended it. I wish more woman did have the strength not to get involved with or stay with abusive men (I had my share). Thank goodness I "grew up" and got my head on straight in time for my young daughter to see me in a healthy relationship with a wonderful man. Maybe educating young girls on self esteem would seem like the answer but so many times they only follow in their mother's footsteps. What a shame. Kudos to the police! I'm sure they would have wanted the outcome to be different than killing the man but they saved many lives by doing their job and protecting that baby and others.

Nice job Walworth County! It is too bad it had to come down to that but in the end the little girl is safe. I feel for the two officers that now have to deal with aftermath of killing a person. I have heard of quite a few police officers that don't ever rebound from events like this. Good Luck.

NUTTY- That's why you're sitting at home in your nice comfy chair while the professionals are out there facing real life events. Leave the decisions to them and everybody will be better off. When they want your opinion on how long an investigation should take they'll come knocking on your door, get you out of bed and ask you.

unbelievable that this little girl almost lost her life because some jackass lawyers obviously plea bargained a previous kidnapping charge.

It's a damn shame our jails are over crowded with people who forget to return their library books on time, and don't pay their parking tickets so now jackass laywers have to plea bargain the real criminals who are a danger to society.

And to any jackass lawyer who wants to comment they are just doing their job, don't bother, because if that little girl had been killed, could you honestly say your job was worth it?

Every year a school somewhere needs expanding, and gets it, how about expanding the jails and prisons so we can keep criminals behind bars where they belong.

Did she DESERVE what happenned? No she didn't. It is comments like yours that make women hesitant to seek help. SHAME ON YOU!

Another case of a woman with low self esteem allowing a loser man take control of her. I wish women would find their inner strength, and know that they don't have to put up with this crap. Thank god this little peanut is young enough that she will most likely forget, but if the mother ends up with another man that abuses her, we are looking at another messed up cycle.

Domestic Violence occurs in MANY households in Wisconsin. I hope if anyone experiences this, they know it is NOT okay, and they do NOT deserve it..if you know of anyone who has been a victim of domestic violence, please offer support and friendship..sometimes it is very difficult for the person to seek help.

I feel so sorry for the mother that had to endure the beating by her child's father and then wondering where her daughter was and if she would be ok..she must have been terrified..I hope the community reaches out to this poor woman and helps get her through this very difficult time..
She still has to bury her child's father..even under the circumstances, and this must be a very traumatic time for her..
My prayers are with you and your baby girl..

The Walworth County Sheriff's Department deputies involved need to be commended on saving the life of this child and keeping the community safe. Their swift actions saved lives yesterday. What a horrible situation to have to deal with, but this is what they are trained to do. And unfortunately yesterday also changed their lives, forever.

Nutty... just an FYI... It's Bloomfield Township Police (not the Pell Lake Police) and I'm assuming it's protocol that any police involved shooting would take many hours to investigate due to having to wait for DOJ officers to arrive, gather evidence, etc. Granted, Walworth County isn't CSI-Las Vegas, but I think they do a pretty good job.

Curlrock, for what it's worth, I was somewhat interested in the story until I saw the picture, then I became very interested. The picture (as grainy as it is) reminded me of my own daughter, and it suddently struck me that I would have had no hesitation to shoot had it been my daughter at risk. It makes me wish I could afford a handgun to protect my family from wackos like this. I second the previous comment, well done Walworth.

Question to Ted Sullivan or Editor. What is the purpose of posting the girls picture in the paper? She was an unwilling participant in this event. Is her picture newsworthing? If she was 10 years old with friends and classmates, is the picture posted? This sad event is newsworthy as it involved the Walworth County authorites. But how does including the innocent childs picture help me understand what happened? If it is simply to sell more papers or advertising, I'll accept that response. I may not agree with it, but I'll accept it. Is there some other journalistic value that I'm missing?
