Police target violators on Milton Avenue

By GAZETTE STAFF  Thursday, July 17, 2008

— If you run a red light or don't stop long enough before turning right on red on Janesville's Milton Avenue, your chances of being pulled over will be greater—at least through the end of the month.

Janesville police are directing patrol efforts at traffic control violators along the busy commercial street from now until the end of the month.

Two officers, in either marked or unmarked cars, will dedicate six hours a day—from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m.—to enforcing traffic signal laws.

Their orders are to stop every violator they see, but writing tickets will be up to their discretion.

This happens all over town. A day doesn`t go by when I don`t see someone run a stoplight
or stop sign. My wife was t-boned by an idiot
that ran two stop signs. She is lucky to be alive. All you people that are in so much of a hurry that you can`t stop for a light or sign
are stupid and aren`t thinking of the danger your causing.

Well there should be a lot of names in the paper for tickets because I never have gone on Milton Avenue and not seen at least 1 red light violation! The funny part is I usually catch up to them at the next light and drove legally. Why push it and get a ticket when you can follow the rules and save a lot of money!!

I'm curious to those bloggers who state that there isn't police presence on Milton Avenue. This begs the question: Are these police vehicles, just perhaps, incognito?

timmo-you sound like an angry, bitter person. Maybe these blogs help you relieve some of your anger, but your issues seem more severe. I am thinking you could use some help, such as counseling. As well as a brush up on your spelling and grammar. jmo

I've driven some pretty big rigs and believe me the situations I'm talking about are not the "enter under green and take a while to turn" or even "enter under yellow". These trucks are usually following another truck and are entering the intersections several seconds after their arrow has turned red.

---

Waiting until the intersection has cleared is required, but that does not allow cars or trucks to keep piling into the intersection after their turn arrow has changed to red.

----

Please step up the enforcement!

Why aren't we using these resources to install an extra police presence on E. Milwaukee? This is where the council wants to waste nearly half a million dollars in tax payer money on the "chance" that someone could be hurt. Wouldn't it make sense to have extra police in that area to send a message to the drivers to slow down?

Okay for the IDIOT who says there is no "police" precense on Milton Avenue at night: If you see any wells today please feel free to fall in, other wise dont bother getting out of bed tommorow! Furthermore, there are so many "police" on that stretch of road Friday and Saturday nights its discusting, a complete waste, utter waste of our tax dollars, and their "Services". Granted its a bunch of hooligans driving around in their trucks and acting like even bigger idiots, I dont think I have ever seen an accident out there, and frankly to have over 10 patroll vehicals is a complete foolish waste! And dont argue with me because I'm right and your wrong. Deal with it.
haha I could go on for hours on this one but I'm bored so I wont.

If I remember correctly, driving school teaches people that you can leave for a green light ONLY once the intersection is cleared. If a truck is halfway through the intersection when their light turns red, they still have the right of way. Now, the guy that speeds up at the end of yellow light and runs the red, he needs to get clobbered by a truck.

I have to agree with Rocky. The trucks that are blowing through the turn arrows are not moving at 55 mph and are not already in the middle of a turn when they no longer have an arrow. They have enough room and time to stop, they just don't want to. The same thing happens all the time at 14 and Deerfield when the trucks are leaving the truck stop and turning west on 14. By the time they pull out of the truck stop they are going 15 mph if that so they do have time to react but totally ignore the light change and go right through it. I live near that area so I am in that intersection several times a day every day and it happens more times than it doesn't. The green light taking traffic out of the shopping center south on Deerfield is short enough as it is without having to wait for these trucks (and a whole lot of Illinois morons) to clear the intersection.

That's a funny story. I just watched someone run a red light crossing Milton Ave. and there was an officer front and center in the left turn lane. The driver was not pulled over. I see this kind of thing all the time. I really don't think the PD cares all that much. They wait until accidents happen and then write tickets. I know they're not going to catch everyone, but it would be nice to see someone get caught once in a while.

I didn't know that traffic laws were enforced in Wisconsin. It's still okay to go thru red lights or not to signal if your hands are busy with the cell phone, texting, or DVD player, correct? If there is a problem with car traffic versus bicycle/pedestrian traffic we could always separate them with I don't know, maybe a tunnel or overhead contraption. :)

gabby06 and br549 are right. Big trucks shouldn't have to obey the same laws as cars. I mean how is a truck driver supposed to remember that after green comes yellow and shortly after that comes red. They're not scientist’s people!! It’s not like they have been trained. How are they supposed to know how fast the truck will stop or go? Think people!!

I agree with ya, br549. Those things don't stop on a dime either. So if they get up to speed and the light changes to yellow just before they get to the line, it's not slam on the brakes. They have to go, they would cause more problems if they tried to stop. If people weren't in such a hurry all the time it wouldn't matter waiting another 5 seconds for a semi to get through an intersection. As for the times, I see more problems during the day than on a Friday night. Yeah the kids are all out wasting gas but there are normally enough cops out that the kids aren't being stupid. And 99% of the time they drive around once and park somewhere. Leave them alone at least they aren't out doing drugs and drinking.

Is that right rocky? What about the 4-5 cars that always seem to travel along with that truck in those left turn lanes. The semi trucks don't just get up and go like a car. They might start out in the intercetion when the light is green but it turns before they get through. People that only drive cars have no idea what it takes to get moving on a very shortly timed light at that intercetion. I just wish that people like yourself could just drive a truck of that size for 1 hour and you would see the other side of things.

The biggest violators that I see are the truck drivers (no pun intended). Especially at 14 and 26, they frequently go through on left turns long after the arrow has turned red. Once a week I sit staring at a green light while a Semi enters the intersection in front of me. Of course I wait. I'm not taking on a Semi no matter how "right" I am.

I can understand them being out at lunch time. There seem to be a lot of people in a hurry then. Also on the way home from work, traffic is crazy. As for adding more police officers to Milton Ave on Friday and Saturday night, it isn't necessary. There is already so much money spent on patrolling it, it would be redundant to add more officers. And no, I'm not in high school and I don't cruise the strip. I for one, try to avoid Milton Avenue all together. Too much congestion for me.

I would say don't use the officer's discretion, give a ticket every time! Everyone that drives knows that doing that stuff is against the laws of the road and have no excuse for it!

Nascar, the idea is to get compliance not necessarily issue a gazillion tickets. So you advertise the fact that they'll be out there and driver's that read it are more likely to comply. That increases safety and that's what they're looking for.

Hopefully this includes pulling over the police officers who choose to operate above the law. It gets old seeing officers speed, change lanes without signals, turn without signals, roll stops. 9 times out of 10 they are usually on their cell phones too.

Good to hear, and about time! Everyday i see at least one blatant violation. Often, I see many more than that. I hope they see what we see. Maybe this will be extended beyond a month if they see how bad it really is.

Most likely it only will last the month because operations like this are usually funded by grants which help cover the overtime incurred. Once the grant money is gone so is the extra enforcement. Actually I think those times are good, most of your violators on that road are actually adults who are in a hurry trying to get things done not the kids who are hanging out later at night.

Its probley because of the increase of traffic accidents in that area. There is no quota.
