Bendtsen wins playoff for State Amateur title
BEAVER DAM Ben Bendtsen III of Racine beat Danny Zimmerman of Verona in a playoff Thursday to win the State Amateur golf tournament at Old Hickory Golf Club.
Matt Behm of Janesville closed with a 1-over 73 and finished in 11th place at 5-over-par 293. Behm had three bogeys, a double bogey and four biridies.
Behm is participating in the Janesville City Men’s Golf Championship, which began this morning.
Zimmerman and Bendtsen had shared the second-round lead and then fell behind Kelly Kretz of Antigo heading into Thursday’s final round.
Bendtsen, who won the Ray Fischer State Medal Play Championship at Janesville Riverside in June, was one stroke behind Kretz as the final round began but fired a 68 to end at 7-under 281.
Zimmerman, two strokes ahead of Bendtsen starting the day, had a 70, and the two finished in a tie for first when Kretz slipped to a 78 and wound up third at even-par 288.
Travis Meyer of River Falls was third at 290 after finishing with his third consecutive round of 72.
Mike Hesselman, a 2008 Edgerton High School graduate, playing for the West Bend Country Club, finished with a 2-over-par 74 and a 19-over-par 307. Alex Gaugert of Lake Geneva finished with a 5-over-par 77 and a 26-over-par 314.
