Janesville 14-year-olds win big in state tourney opener

MARINETTE — Janesville shelled Eau Claire, 15-1, in five innings to start the 14-year-old Babe Ruth state baseball tournament here Wednesday.

Janesville scored 10 runs on eight hits and three errors to put the game away in the second inning. Dane Burman connected on a two-run single to key the inning.

“We stayed pretty focused,” Janesville coach Tom Davey said. “We made a couple mental mistakes in the first inning. We could have scored a few more runs.’’

Burman allowed two hits and one run through the first three innings to gain the win for Janesville. Burman walked two and notched four strikeouts.

Janesville faces Bay Port at 6:30 p.m. today in the winners’ bracket of the double elimination tournament.
