Janesville Legion rolls over Burlington

BURLINGTON — Janesville's American Legion baseball team was not kind to the home team in the second round of the Burlington Class AAA regional tournament.

Fueled by a 14-hit attack that included five doubles and a home run, Janesville advanced to the third round in the winners’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament with a 11-4 rout of Burlington here Thursday night.

Janesville, which opened with a 10-0 shutout of Franklin on Wednesday, will be idle until it takes on the winner of tonight’s Beloit/Genoa City game at 12:30 p.m. here Saturday.

Matt Beyer’s three-run homer in the second put Janesville in command against Burlington at 4-0. Burlington got back within 4-3 in the fourth, but the rest of the night belonged to Janesville.

Marcus Moser’s RBI single in the Janesville fifth made it 5-3, and Tyler Teubert’s two-run double with two outs triggered a three-run sixth. David Jacobson followed with an RBI single that made it 8-3.

Zach Whalen’s pinch-hit double ignited Janesville’s final at-bat in the nine-inning game. He scored on Ian Larson’s single, and dropped fly ball led to two more runs that completed the decisive victory.

“We’re hitting the ball well and getting timely hitting,’’ Janesville assistant coach Bob Schenck said, “and our pitchers are keeping us in the game. And we’ve got our ace (Garrett Morris) ready to go on Saturday.’’
