Daniel Olson

— A second Rock County driver in five days was arrested Sunday on charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

Daniel D. Olson, 56, of 10300 W. Laird Road, Beloit, was arrested after a fiery crash in his driveway at 12:41 a.m. Sunday killed his wife, Vickie M. Olson, according to a news release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary investigation shows Daniel was traveling north in his driveway when his 1993 Geo Tracker went off the driveway and smashed head-on into a tree.

The car caught fire, but Daniel was able to free himself and Vickie, who was the passenger.

Emergency personnel found Vickie about 20 feet from the car. She was transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Orfordville Fire Department put out the car fire.

Daniel was being held in the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance.

Vickie was not wearing a seatbelt.

The accident is still under investigation.

It is the second fatality within a week that authorities suspect involve alcohol. On Wednesday, Richard K. Bennett, 23, of 3103 Mt. Zion Ave., Janesville, was arrested on charges of homicide by the intoxicated use of a motor vehicle after a crash in Turtle Township killed Katherine Fernihough, 22, Beloit.

This family is very close the children are standing by their dad. They don't want to see this end with a sentence. They'll continue to fight and to stay together.

We are all so quick to judge. If you think he was quilty of murder than you need to think of her as committing suicide. She got into the car with someone who was drunk and chose not to wear a seatbelt. You can cast blame all you want but it was a tradgedy all the way around. They both made errors in judgement that night. Haven't we all?

optimism: of course it wasnt intentional, what drunk driving murder is?? if a stranger was drunk and hit/killed the wife how much jail should he get?? even tho he too has to live with it forever. it matters not that hes the husband. i feel bad for this dude, there is counseling available in prison, but he should go away LONGER cuz it was his wife. THESE are the lessons we need to teach if we ever hope to find a cure for this cancer...

I admit I certainly have drivin drunk in the past, and am not proud of it. I am just glad that the Lord sat beside me when I made those bad decisions. I understand the laws, and that this man committed a crime, but I don't see it as intentional...yes he decided to drink and drive, but he did not premeditate the death of his wife. I think there is no punishment that would ever equal the punishment his grief is going to give him for the rest of his life. Just terrible, and I am so sorry for all of you. Please don't let these saints on here fool you. No one is perfect, we all have sins, and not one sin is worse than another. I pray for your emotional and mental healing.

olliespearl-

Thank you! You have stated wonderfully the problem that exists.

I also saw the Public Record for today and noticed the same thing. There are just too many multiple offenders STILL driving around drunk, some for the 4th or 5th time. Some people should just not be allowed back on the road.

My sympathy goes out to this family as I do know them and pray for their strength in Gods Healing.
I to want to point out to the readers here that something seriously needs to be done about drinking and driving. Just go to the public records listed for today, five out of six drivers were arrested with prior DWI's.
One first time, three second time, one fourth time and one a fifth time! What the hell is going on, take their dang DL's away! I have 22, 20 and 19 year old sons driving responsibly on the roadways and soon a 16 year old driving! Is a mother to live in fear when her sons are on the road??? I have five more children too raise to driving age and whats it going to be like when they get there? Things need to change real soon or we are all going to be living in constant emotional pain because someone made the wrong choice to drink and drive. Its bad enough that accidents happen that dont involve drinking and driving. Blessings to all!

after looking at the rules for posting i see nothing wrong in this blog. this is america and we have the right to voice our opinions. Tweetpea was being symphathic with the family and did state that this is a tragedy. drinking and driving is very stupid yes. But you also need to be able to speak what you want to in here as long as you follow uncle Gazette's rules. So with that all being said.....irishgirl I do beleive that you were out of place by attacking Tweetpea for only doing what she has the right to do in here. she was not attacking anyone just stating her opinion. Can't we all just get along???? or do you feel the need to bash me now??

I can't seem to wrap my mind around why we aren't supposed to pass judgment on this man for what he did just because he loved his wife. I hope he goes to prison for a while because next time it could be your wife, your mother, your grandmother, or even you. Good riddance.

thekid, I have to admit I agree with you on this 100%! I never thought that would happen.
Unfortunately, I have had to deal with a family member being hit by a drunk driver. I would go through what I said, but I posted on the blog for:

"4 years in prison for highway death 1:47 p.m."

I can't post my feelings about this YET again, so please visit that blog for my comments.

TWEETPEA: NO I DON'T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY, NO ONE REALLY DOES, BUT I KNOW MORE THAN YOU SEEM TO, SO UNTIL YOU KNOW ALL THE FACTS, KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF, FAMILY MEMBERS ARE READING THIS AND THEY DON'T NEED TO HEAR YOUR OPINIONS.

i am sad for this family. im sad when it happens every day. i am a former drunk driver, most people who drink do it at one point or another. the fact that this guy was a good guy an was so close with his wife makes it that much worse, but nonetheless, tweetpea is correct, he is guilty and should go to jail for a LONG time. even the nice guys are guilty and if we dont start really punishing people it will happen again. ah F it, who am i kidding, it will happen again anyways......

TWEETPEA- DON'T PASS JUDGEMENT UNTIL YOU KNOW THE WHOLE STORY. YOU ARE ONLY HEARING PART OF IT, THERE IS MORE TO IT THAN WHAT WAS REPORTED

I have to say that I am shocked at this accident. I have seen what a loving man Dan was to his wife. I never saw them apart. Always together laughing, dancing, having a great time enjoying life. I wish the best for their family and its hard to think someone already has to live with losing their loved one but also being the cause of it could tear someone apart. I'm sure that will be a punishment in itself.

I hope that all of the people who have ever made a negative comment about people drinking and driving and who pass judgement have one heck of a squeaky clean back ground, and have never ever done anything wrong in there life, or you ever do anything wrong that might land your picture in the paper for everyone to pass judgement on. I always say, what goes around, comes around. These people's lives will never be the same again. They are good people, and no matter what, they did not deserve this. Liz...my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Keep the faith.

Is there any way to do a follow up story on this article? I used to know this family, and I don't want people to judge too quickly. This man has no previous record of any sort, it seems like a horrble accident that this family wil have to live with forever. My thoughts are with all of you.

Yes, this is very sad. When will people learn not to drink and drive??? So Many People have been killed by this kind of action, so many lives have been changed forever! We all need to remember if we drink, please don't drive, and we will save so many heart aches!

Good people make mistakes everyday and they are the ones who have to live with them, not any of us. We all wish we could go back and change something we did. No one needs to pass judgement or criticism at a time like this. And especially now, the family doesn't need any more negativity; just support.
Our hearts and prayers go to the family who lost a mother, a wife, a new grandma.
