Monterey Dam and the Rock River might change dramatically thanks to Janesville's Park and Open Space Plan.

Manager of Planning Services Duane Cherek says the dam could be restored or removed altogether as the city implements the Park and Open Space Plan. Community Development Director Brad Cantrell says the city manager met with the Department of Natural Resources. Cantrell says both parties are interested in pursuing a study to look into the future of the dam. Cantrell says within the next couple years, the city will also probably conduct a study into the use of the Rock River.

The plan crossed its first hurdle Monday night with unanimous approval from Janesville's Plan Commission. It next moves to the City Council for approval.
