Madison Memorial falls in state baseball quarterfinals
Grand Chute Madison Memorial High School’s bid for a WIAA state baseball championship in Dave Thomas’ first year as head coach came to a sudden halt Tuesday.
The Spartans, who shared the Big Eight title with Middleton, had a 12-game winning streak snapped by Kimberly, 11-1, in a five-inning Division 1 state quarterfinal game at Fox Cities Stadium.
Kimberly also beat Memorial, 10-0, in a five-inning state championship game last June. After winning the rematch, the Papermakers advanced to the 2008 title game against Kenosha Bradford by whipping La Crosse Central, 8-4, in Tuesday’s night’s semifinals.
Memorial was making its fourth straight state appearance. The Spartans qualified by edging Thomas’ alma mater, Janesville Parker, in a 2-0 sectional final last week and finished the season with a 19-6 record.
Winning pitcher Brad Schreiber threw a three-hitter, went 3-for-3 and drove in five runs to lead Kimberly’s latest rout of Memorial. He had a two-run homer in a three-run first inning, a three-run double in a four-run second and added a triple in the third.
