Tyler DeBoer’s 16 strikeouts weren’t enough to save Waupun High School’s defending champions in the Division 2 semifinals of the WIAA state baseball tournament.
While the Waupun ace was racking up his strikeouts, Tyler Kozelka was pitching a two-hitter and leading Prairie du Chien to a 4-0 victory over the Warriors (17-7) here Wednesday night at Fox Cities Stadium.
West De Pere (20-5) shut out Barron, 6-0, in the other semifinal game and was scheduled to play Prairie du Chien (19-5), the Evansville sectional champion, for the Division 2 title at 3 p.m. today.
Prairie du Chien got five hits off DeBoer, but only two of its runs were earned. The Blackhawks took control in a three-run third inning that included RBI singles by Kyle Nack and Logan Mikkelson.
Kozelka, who had 11 strikeouts and no walks, retired 21 of the 23 batters he faced.
West De Pere beat Barron (19-4) on Garrett Scray’s four-hitter.
