Milton considers dropping bus routes
MILTON The Milton School Board also heard a proposal Monday to eliminate busing for most Harmony Elementary School students who live in subdivisions east of Highway 26 and north of Highway 14.
Besides a handful of students who live east of Wuthering Hills Drive, all Milton students in that area live less than two miles from Harmony, Superintendent Peg Ekedahl wrote in a memo to the school board.
The city of Janesville is planning to install sidewalks on both sides of Rotamer Road this summer, providing a safe walkway for the students to get to school, Ekedahl said.
The change would eliminate one morning route and three evening routes for a savings of $11,000 in 2008-09, Ekedahl said.
The district also hopes to work with Riteway Bus Company in the fall of 2008 to see if it can eliminate three morning routes for students in grades 4 to 12 for additional savings, Ekedahl said. The change would require longer middle and high school routes in rural areas.

I think it is a bad idea,as a mother and a taxpayer. Just tell us where is the extra money going to? Someone expecting a raise this year?

There is no way I will let my 6 yr old walk 2 miles to school. I drove it today and I am exactly 2 miles from Harmony. My son would have to cross 8 streets to get to school. I understand that we have been fortunate with the current bus route. But the school dist. is just going to end up using the $11,000 in savings and re-construct a drop off lane or better parking lot for Harmony. Drop off and pick ups are dangerous right now I can't imagine what it is going to be like next year with that many more vehicles driving there.

as far as eliminating routes, they only have to provide bus service within the 2 mile range until a certain age, i believe it s 3rd grade after that they are on their own

they are now redoing the road , you think they are gonna skip the bike lane ? beside s janesville wants sidewalk s down the whole road not just certain parts of it , these people have already lost approx, 30 ft of their front yards, now with sidewalks, it will be another 5or 6 feet, then you add in the fact they cant park on the street because both sides are no parking, after they took most of their driveways where are they suppose to park? milton school district goes all the way down to briar crest, if you take a drive out there that portion already has bike lanes installed

etown, there is no bike lane on Rotamer Rd, where the articles is referring to. And I think the bike lane in the street is the dumbest thing ever. I won't let me kids ride their bikes there because it is to close to the road!
I don't know how riteway can eliminate 3 evening routes. Right now my kids ride the bus to and from school and almost every seat has 3 kids sitting in it already.

what makes no sense they have already installed bike lanes on this road, taken part of the residents property to have them there, now they want sidewalks?

Oh, that wouldn't work out very well for us. I hope they don't cut our route but understand the reasoning.
