— Milton Middle School students might change from Raiders into Red Wings next year under a proposal from the student council.

In his first year as principal, Tim Schigur noticed hardly anyone used the Raiders name at the middle school, he said. The school didn’t even have a logo.

The student council led the drive for a new name, he said. The council came up with about a dozen options and had the student body vote. Red Wings was the overwhelming favorite, Schigur said.

Students designed a school logo to incorporate the new name.

Schigur said the new name will help connect the middle school to the high school nickname, the Red Hawks.

“We’re not the big bird, yet,” he said. “We’re just getting our wings.”

The Milton School Board heard a first reading of the proposal Monday. It will go for a second reading and a vote for approval at a future meeting.
