The new Menards store on N. Milton Ave. appears to be on track to be open for business sometime this spring.
JANESVILLE While headway is being made on the opening of a new Menards in Janesville, city officials are working to make sure the store’s existing location on Pontiac Place won’t be vacant for long.
Jeff Abbott, a spokesman for the Eau Claire-based Menards, said the new store at the intersection of Highway 26 and Interstate 90 will open in late spring.
The new 240,000-square-foot Menards is under construction at the former site of the Ramada Inn and Janesville Oasis. It will include a full-service lumberyard and enclosed outdoor garden center.
Menards, a family-owned company that started in 1960, has 235 home improvement stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The Janesville store at 2700 Pontiac Place opened in 1984 in 52,000 square feet. At the time, it was Menards’ 24th store and cost an estimated $3 million to build.
Gale Price, manager of Janesville’s Building and Development Services, said the city is working with a Chicago company that is interested in redeveloping the former Menards’ site.
Price would not identify the potential developer or project.
“The ball’s really in their court,” Price said of the developer, who does have a prospect for the site.

Typical Janesville - either bash GM workers and their wages, or, tell private investment how they should invest, and dictate what their vacant buildings should become.

Funny how Janesville "wants" certain amenities, but those same people below have no capital to make it happen.

How about something family oriented that doesn't involve food (i.e. Chuck E. Cheese)? We really miss The Skatin Place, however I'm sure the big biz boys would run that idea right down the can. Any other ideas along those lines?

I'd like a Beef A Roo, or even a Machine Shed, I love their food and stop there whenever I am in Rockford.

I'm surprised no one has brought up that it might be a hotel. I can see them demolishing the old Menards and putting in something that would be competitive to the Holiday Inn Express right across the interstate! Not that we need it, but always a possibility.
I also heard Golden Corral fell through and is not coming any more. I have heard Red Lobster, TGIFriday's, and possibly Chili's next to the new Menards site. And, of course the Del Taco that is already being constructed there...
I agree that a Barnes and Nobles or Borders would be something different for Janesville and a nice addition.

Just what Janesville needs another franchise fast/sit down restaurant. I never understood why the Pontiac Convention Center never wanted the Menards property rather than the old Skatin Place. How about a Circuit City or American. I agree with earlier posts no more quick loan or dollar stores.

It'd be nice if a real home improvement store ie: Lowe's opened up in this town.
I'm craving the Chili's, TGI Fridays rumor. How about a Red Lobster too while we are at. Maybe they could buy out Shakeys

I heard from a few "Chicago" developers that are active in the I-94 corridor from Kenosha to Racine, that the location of the old Menards is desirable, but the access (egress/ingress) is horrible.
*
The thought was maybe that equipment rental place, or perhaps the small furniture place (on Pontiac?)would be acquired and demolished.
*
Depending on redesign of the old Menards, perhaps either would lease space in a new configuration.
*
The clues are definitely indicated by what is located along I-94 in SE WI - given distribution routes etc.

Are you talking about the new Menards or the old Menards. The Del Taco is going by the new Menards. The question that Northman asked pertained to what is being built by the new Menards not the old Menards. The Del Taco is the rather small building you can see right along Hwy 26. There was also supposed to be a Golden Corral next to it but I heard that fell through. A couple other rumors I've heard for the new Menards is Friday's and/or Chiles. As far as the old Menards is concernced, I agree that Barnes and Noble would be great. I had originally heard that BaN was supposed to go where Hobby Lobby is but Walmart woudln't allow it.

It's an awkward location, to be sure, but one with high visibility. A Del Taco won't fill that space by a long shot, though (a big one might be 6000 sq. ft. or so). Or is the city expecting the building to be demolished and the site given over to a couple of "outlot" style businesses?

Right by the interstate, that would be an excellent location for an adult video store. Maybe a combination porn shop/dollar store/payday loan shop.
