Cookie sales fall short for local Girl Scouts
Podcast Episode
Kyle Geissler talks with Janesville Gazette reporter Cathy Idzerda about Girl Scouts' cookie sales falling short.
JANESVILLE All right, somebody needs to take responsibility for this.
Who hasn’t bought their share of Girl Scout Cookies?
This year, the Girl Scouts of Badger Council set a goal to sell 315,000 boxes of cookies but fell 85,000 boxes short.
Because most of us could finish off a box of Caramel deLites between breakfast and the first boring meeting of the workday and then another one during the mid-afternoon slump, it’s hard to imagine how the council could fall so short.
“We thought we would do a little bit better, but with the economy and gas prices the way they are, it’s hard,” said Brooke Virgin, product sales director for the Badger Council.
The annual Girl Scout cookie sale is a critical fund-raiser for the local council.
“Keep in mind that you’re not just purchasing a box of cookies, you’re giving to the girls,” Brooke said.
The drop in sales means a $46,750 loss in troop proceeds and $250,750 less for programs for girls. Local troops get 55 cents for each box they sell, and the money is used for a variety of programs and often returns to the community in the form of service projects.
The cookie sales also help pay for books and uniforms in low-income areas, where scouting is one of the few positive opportunities for girls.
Badger Council has started a second chance sale, for people who forgot to buy cookies the first time and for those of us who went through two boxes of Peanut Butter Patties, a box of Caramel deLites and a box of Thin Mints in approximately three days.
“We’re having a ‘Go for the Goal’ campaign,” Brooke said. “For each two cases a troop sells, they are entered in a drawing for a trip to a water park. There will be other prizes, too.”
If each active Girl Scout salesgirl can sell just 24 more boxes, the council can reach its goal.
If you don’t know a scout, you can call 1-800-362-3226 and the council will connect you with a scout leader in your area.
The Girl Scouts of Badger Council serves more than 4,000 girls and adult volunteers in Rock, Walworth and Green counties and a small portion of Winnebago County in Illinois.

DrTalk and momof5, you just made my day! Your comments are great. I was having a hard time reading through the tears in my eyes after "Stick a shortbread in it" and had to take a laugh break! So thank you. Whoda thought the Girl Scout cookie sales could inspire such wit?
I was checking this story because I was sure it was a joke! I was convinced that the Girl Scouts of America could be more than financially stable at the sole hand of my mother-in-law who dropped off at my house no less than eight boxes because she didn't know what to do with them all! Ha! And that was *after* dropping off similar loads to a couple of my husbands other brothers!

momof5,
If I would have said something like "I think it's great that the Girl Scouts sell cookies because a woman's place in the kitchen making baked goods," I bet you would have been offended. But I made a comment that said I wouldn't reinforce that stereotype and you still were offended. You can't have it both ways.
My comment was intended to attack political correctness, not gender. You on the other hand clearly slighted the male gender(something that is in vogue nowadays) with your "nuts" comment probably because you assumed I was slighting the female gender. Public schools have actually been emasculating males. http://www.salvomag.com/new/articles/sal...
So instead of arguing with me, you can join me in the fight against political correctness.

momof5,
You owe me a box of thin mints and caramel-de-lites because I actually was joking. I guess I need to say when I'm joking and when I'm not because I guess people can't really tell in this type of environment.
Hopefully you learned that you shouldn't gamble.
And what do mean by "gaging by my other posts?" I've never said anything remotely sexist on GazetteExtra. In fact, I've never even used any offensive language. I've never had a post removed from this site.

If people are blaming the economy and gas prices for not buying a cheap box of cookies, then there are bigger problems in this country than I thought. Is it too hard for people to stop living beyond their means? Consumers have been trained well, spend, borrow, spend some more, charge it, then cry like babies when the economy takes a hit. People need to break the cycle and start saving, budgeting, and spending wisely. Perhaps when that day comes they will once again be able to drop $4 on a box of cookies.

I didn't even realize it was cookie time! I'm not living under a rock or anything, but there were no clues as in years past, no local girl scout knocking on the door, no cookie order forms at work, and no way to know that it was going on. I wish I knew if I could still get some, those cookies are the best!

DrTalk: put a shortbread in it! To follow your logic, you must not buy peanuts or popcorn from the Boy Scouts either, because that would feed into the stereotype that boys are nuts? I certainly hope you were only kidding, but gaging by your other posts, I'd be willing to bet a box of thin mints AND carmel-de-lites you weren't!

Add me to the list that would've bought cookies, but were never asked. I think the Girl Scouts need to figure out a way to get the word out if they don't want to go door to door anymore. Put a note in everyone's mailbox. Erect a tent in the parking lots like the fireworks vendors do, and take turns with your parents selling cookies. There must be more ways to sell them yet.

I don't buy Girl Scout cookies because then I'd be reinforcing the stereotype that the only way women can get ahead in this world is through baked goods.

I NEVER FEEL GUILTY AFTER EATING GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. By the way, the shortbread ones have always been my favorite (although I miss the old style offering which was thinner and had sugar on top).

only getting $.55 per box does add up. our troop got back over $1700.00 dollars. that will be used for there badges and for the girls to go on field trips. our next one planned is for a sleep over at the museum in milwaukee.

ABC Bakers is the official Girl Scout Cookie Baker. They are part of Interbake Foods based out of Virginia. Where does the foreign owner come in?

Oh boy! They get a whole $.55 per box? I don't buy them because the cookie company is a foreign company that is using the little girls to get rich. If you support the girls....give 'em cash. Eliminate the middle man.

I bought one from the daughter of a woman I work with. The girl came in and asked me if I wanted to buy. I asked her to recommend a flavor and she did.
Two more boxes were from a girl at 4H. When I got my two boxes, she asked if I wanted any more because they had low sales. I took two more boxes then too.
Both girls had to work for the sale and both moms really were just along to escort. Compare that to past years where one of the guys at work just placed the order form near the mailboxes for a few days.

I don't think it's an issue of "it's not safe to go door-to-door" rather than parents are too busy to take the children.
I will not buy cookies from the parent, as well meaning as they may be.

Irish - just because the Scout herself did not come to the workplace (aren't they supposed to be in school) does not mean they did not sell door to door. My co-workers ask me to bring my daughter's cookie sheet in to work. It isn't as safe to go door to door selling cookies anymore. The girls do still learn skills and values by visiting the neighbors they know, tallying the orders, sorting the orders, delivering the cookies, and writing out personalized thank-you notes.

Maybe the Girl Scouts of America should be scolding the parents who didn't pimp the cookies enough at GM and other workplaces.
I know I was accosted by no less than 3 order forms where I work, yet they weren't presented by the Scout herself. It was always Mom, Dad, or Grandma.
I recall having to sell my own cookies when I was a Girl Scout. I didn't have mommy and daddy doing the legwork.
I didn't buy cookies because having a parent sell for you is not teaching the Scout the skills and values cookie sales are supposed to develop.

Slow sales for the Girl Scouts cookies....a sign of high gas prices along with a recession. There is always next year.....
