Janesville Police Officer Ed VanFossen carries a box of liquor to a police truck outside Super Beer Depot & Liquor Store.

— After the arrests of two more young men in connection with burglaries at Super Beer Depot, Janesville police moved the defunct business’ remaining stock Tuesday and arranged to meet with the owner Thursday for him to relinquish his alcohol license.

The store, vacant except for a large amount of liquor, beer and other items, has been burglarized at least 11 times since Jan. 1, 2007, said Capt. Dan Davis of the Janesville Police Department.

“There probably were more than that. We just don’t know about them,” Davis said, basing his statement on interviews with the suspects arrested Monday.

Because of the most recent rash of thefts, police started to inventory the defunct store’s remaining stock Tuesday in preparation to move it to police storage for safekeeping.

Deputy Police Chief Steve Kopp said he was to meet with the owner, Kirit Sura, an Illinois resident, Thursday afternoon for Sura to relinquish his liquor license and to discuss payment for the department’s expenses to inventory, move and store the remaining stock.

City officials aren’t sure how long the store has been out of business.

Their first indication came when a water bill was returned as undeliverable mail in July, said Jennifer Petruzzello, the city’s interim neighborhood services director.

It appeared, Davis said, that Sura simply locked the door one day and walked away.

“The difficulty we have in getting this taken care of is that owner, Kirit Sura, lives in Crystal Lake (Ill.) and is a very uninvolved business owner. He just won’t respond,” said Davis, who dated such problems with Sura to 15 years ago when Davis was a patrol officer.

Police announced the arrest of four young men Monday.

Tuesday morning, police records showed the arrests of two more Janesville men on charges of burglary and theft:

-- Matthew W. Streuly, 18, of 1223 Center Ave.

-- Daniel G. Cerny, 17, of 129 N. Crosby Ave.

The preliminary charges for the first four Janesville men arrested were:

-- Kevin J. Porter, 19, of 2722 Alexandria Place, party to burglary and receiving stolen property.

-- Nicholas A. Stone, 19, of 515 N. Palm St., two charges of burglary and two charges of theft.

-- Michael A. Hanson, 18, of 815 Cambridge Drive, two charges of burglary, two charges of theft.

-- Craig T. Nandory, 17, of 1155 N. Huron St., two charges of theft.

Two groups of young men burglarized the store, 1621 W. Court St., early Monday morning, and one of the groups burglarized it twice, Davis said.

Some of the stolen alcohol fueled an underage drinking party, he added.

The two groups were not connected to each other, but word has spread through the Janesville grapevine that the store was an easy mark, Davis said.

In one group were Porter, Stone and Hanson, and the second group comprised Nandory, Cerny and Streuly, Davis said.

A Rock County sheriff’s deputy noticed Stone’s vehicle leaving the liquor store and followed it to his home, recording the license number and address, Davis said.

When the deputy returned to see if the building had been burglarized, he saw a vehicle containing the second group, recorded the license number and alerted Janesville police of both groups and both cars.

Police arrested both groups shortly thereafter.

The group of Porter, Stone and Hanson burglarized the building twice Monday morning, Davis said, basing his statement on admissions made by some of the suspects.

The first group left a door unlocked, “and kids just started walking in,” he said.

Hey any update on if this owner showed up yesterday to relinquish his liquor license to the police department in the meeting they had scedueled? I,m suprised at how the Gazette was all over this ongoing story until the cops finally emptied the store (party supply palace) out now the paper has lost interest....... Will this be the last article on this place until the owner finally shows up to burn the place down when nobody is looking?

I think it is about time for everyone to move on to a new "problem", if you dont know these boys personally there is no reason to keep telling them how wrong they have been, assuming they dont already know that. As said in previous comments, they are "adults by law", so more and likely they will learn from their mistakes like most adults. I know 2 of the boys personally, i use to babysit one of them when i was younger and im very good friends with the others brother, APorter. And now i feel unless you know how the boys are taking in this "mistake", you shouldnt assume they arent in regret. They have paid for their crime and will continue paying for it, especially with janesville being so obsessed with other peoples lives more than their own, they will hear about it longer then there punishment will last. So if you are not a family member or a close friend of these boys then please go worry about your own lives or your own kids, and if you feel its neccessary to continue commenting on horrible things that happen in janesville, there was a recent bust of prostitution at the local strip club screaming meemees. I think thats a bit more disgraceful then a couple of boys stealing alcohol, at least their not spreeding STD's.

Aporter: I apologize for misleading you into believing that my family is perfect. We are far from perfect, I have done things wrong in my life as have my kids. We have also paid the price for these things, as should these young men. Yes, I am sure all people make MISTAKES, but this was not a MISTAKE. If one of my kids were involved in something like this, I would expect them to do some time for it.

I am absolutely heartsick about this situation. I have known 3 of these boys as former high school students of mine. This whole situation stuns me because I truly can't believe that these particular boys were involved in such a crime. I have known them to be well mannered boys with many terrific possibilities in front of them...boys who have nice families. One boy was an advisee of mine, and I am terribly saddened by his poor choice. Having said that, each and every boy involved with this ordeal will have to pay a price for making a bad choice, one I absolutely believe they knew the potential consequences of. Stealing is wrong, no matter what the circumstances. If going to jail for a couple of days, paying attorney's fees, and paying fines are the things that teach them a lesson, then so be it. They are lucky that is all the punishment they got. This situation could have been so much worse. I am sure this is a very difficult time for their families. I am a mother and I sure hope that none of my children make similar choices; however, I know that is always a possibilty. I would expect that my own child/ren would receive the same consequences.

+1 beatle. That pretty much sums it up.

I'd say their punishment fits the crime. Could have been worse for them. Live and learn.

APorter, judging by your description of events, your brother was charged with exactly what was appropriate. You and your brother will get no sympathy by whining about how others got off easy (allegedly). I'm hoping that your brother is owning up to his responsibilities better than you are. (Revised comment that was removed by staff. Hopefully it can stay this time)

So the owner did just walk away. He probably hoped his problems with the business would just go away as well. despite how awful his neglect has been, you can't say it was all his fault. Of course these kids should not have done what they did. The subject that should really be up for discussion is why did the police give some of the kids that were caught in the act a ride home, while others who did not even step foot on the property spent 2 nights in jail! THATS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW AND THAT IS WHY I AM (so angry)!!! (censored)

Kevin J. Porter - party to burglary and receiving stolen property. Dumb for even being there of course, but never left his car a block away. Went home and was in bed so he could work in the morning. He was woke up at 3:30 in the morning and taken to jail for 2 days. Meanwhile, other participants got a ride home and nothing more. Complete crap! If I'm getting anything wrong please let me know.

Benthinkin - I realize that everyone starts out with "just a mistake," then they learn that they should never do it again. If they choose to do it again then they should not be given another chance. If my brother chooses to participate in another act like this, I will not be defending him, but for now I believe he will learn his lesson. I have already notice a change in him. I know it could just be the shock of it all still but i promise that his family will not let him forget. Like I said before, these are not kids you need to be afraid of, they would never hurt a person, and hopefully they will learn to make better choices after this all is over.
Zoom - They are legally adults, but still make childish choices, so therefor, I will call them kids. They are learning the hard way what being an adult is. They now know that they cannot get away with things with a slap on the wrist. As for the comments, what do you want us to say about the burglary and theft? It shouldn't have happened? How did the kids find out about the massive amounts of alcohol in the building? If the police knew that it was being broken into, why wasn't it emptied earlier? Why were some kids let go when others were made an example of? How much alcohol has disappeared since September '07 and how much these groups have with them? These are just a few questions i have. If you have something to say about the burglary and theft, say it. Until you can convince me that these are bad people who belong in jail, don't say anything. Your nothingness is unreal.
So I think I've said what I had to say. I hope I don't have to post again. I didn't want to post a second time but reading your comments got me worked up and i couldn't resist. I'm sorry if I disrespected someones opinion or was overly sarcastic, but I will speak my mind, as you will speak yours. Also, its late, so lay off any spelling of grammatical errors... I know I'm not good enough to write for the gazette...

Bluto - I don't know who you are telling to start drinking heavily, My advice to you is to not post random comments that have no true meaning and get a hobby other than smartassolgist. Please respond if you have something to say, just don't waste my time.
MajorMojo - come on, anyone who regrets something they did can call it a mistake. I'll give you the fact that most of the time they only regret it if they get caught. These kids do regret it though, and for the rest of their lives they wont be telling this story as a way to look "cool." Its going to be a story of one time when they made a horrible mistake and payed a price. I thank you for being one of the mature ones here and I agree that everyone in America is sick of spending their hard earned money to control the crime, but I guarantee these kids will not cost you another dime. They will have learned their lesson when this is over.
Doc0430 - WHAT? Did I miss something or are you just typing random nonsense because you are bored? Let me know, I'm interested.... kind of...not really. Yeah, I'm a smartassologist too.
Road King - thanks for telling your children about the consequences of being a bad, bad person. I hope in the near future your children do something to disappoint you, since they have never. I hope the paper makes a big of a deal out of what they did. Ok, I'm lying, i don't wish this on anyone, but at least imagine what it would be like if one of your children were involved in this. Young people do foolish things, i don't know anyone that hasn't made a MISTAKE. Get over your fantasy of how perfect your family is and admit that given the circumstance, any human can do something that they know is not morally right, as severe as this situation or not.
Mytake4u - you are the worst kind on sarcastic (donkey)bag. The people who are defending these "punks" (which I take as a compliment because being a punk, despite formal definition, implies that a person is open minded and challenges the beliefs of individuals around them, has their own opinions, does not conform to the "right" way of thinking,) are the people who actually know these punks. They are the people who have seen the true punks, the everyday good punks, who occasionally make bad decisions like any other human. Wow, now that i think of it, I don't even know why I'm getting so worked up over what you said. None of it proved any point or expressed any respectable opinion. It just seems like you wanted to say something to be involved, so you wrote random comments expected from a middle school girl who was angry with a friend who danced with a boy you liked. I'm done with you, thanks for the laugh though, haha haha.

consider this..if kids throw a party at their parents house, even if the parents are out of town, the parents are still considered at fault. So why is it any different for this business owner. He left it full of alcohol for months, i think he is defnitely at fault here. AND what these kids are being charged with is waaay out of line, considering people who have gotten 2 DUI's in 2 consecutive nights are free to do as they please...you can say this will teach them a lesson and keep them from a bad future..but most people who end up in jail come out the same if not worse.

A porter, you talk about "crack heads, alcoholics, and Jansevilles true scum" as an example of bad people. Don't you realize that they too started off by "just made a mistake".
You don't want others to judge these kids and yet you are all over those others.
I wish no ill will on these kids, but they need to be accountable at a high enough level so they are able to see the light early enough as to not become a repeat offender like those others you talked about.
Hopefully the judge is smart and competent and able to balance the decison. To lenient and they are at risk of other behavior, to strict and their lives will be forever altered.

Ok, obviously my younger brother Kevin and his friends Nick and Mike are dumb, I know it, you know it, and yes, they now know it. I only speak for them because I don't know any of the others involved. I'm still shocked and P-O'ed at what they did. Honestly though, have you ever seen this much controversy over someone getting caught stealing clothes from the mall, or someone getting arrested for yet another OWI, or even a crack head robbing a gas station with a knife? Crime happens everyday, I mean really, how about the JPD spends more time looking for that cocaine manufacturer/dealer that I seen everyday on the new fancy expensive billboard? They should have had that place empty and boarded up after the first break in. They knew Sura was gone and didn't care what happened to his store. When it comes down to it, the kids took beer... beer that Sura obviously didn't care about, he was probably planning on having it stolen so he didn't have to deal with it. I know that it wasn't theirs, and yeah stealing is stealing blah blah, but these kids have never been in trouble before, they are all high school graduates, they all have jobs, their parents are not crack heads or alcoholics that were never involved, so unless you know them personally, you have no idea. It was a horribly stupid decision, they will pay, they are paying by having to spend 2 days in jail with Janesville's true scum. Ask the guards that were there, the kids are not like those people. So don't worry, they wont hurt you. Don't get scared and run to your car if you see them out. They're not the ones that are making this town crap! Oh, and the gazette is also crap! Lazy writers, pay attention to detail if you're going to write about a "Catastrophe in Janesville." Dang kids, we had a nice safe town before you decided to steal!

Where on earth do some of you get off thinking that just because the door was open/unlocked that this should change things???? This was not property that they were invited to by the owner. What they did is called is called trespassing. There was property taken out that did not belong to them. That is called theft. It is very plain and simple. If you left you home unlocked, does that give me permission to go in and take your property??? Do you hear how lame that sounds??? Oh and let's really sound stupid when we say whatelse do we expect when there is nothing else to do for someone under 21!! Like the only thing to do when you're over 21 is go to the bars.

Regardless of whether they are "good little angels" or have had a ticket or two in their past, I'm sure they know that taking things that don't belong to them is wrong. Stop making excuses for them. They did the crime, now they should have to do the time. I can't hardly fathom any more how some people in Janesville continually defend the actions of people who break the law. I make plenty of mistakes(I'm human), but I don't expect my family and friends to defend my choices. I would expect them to support me through the consequences and help me to make better choices the next time.

These young men are human as well and unfortunately made a mistake, a big one. Stop defending them and help them re-learn a lesson from childhood that they forgot....don't take something that does not belong to you.

Personally i think this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. This just shows how isolated this town is. Realisiclly if this happened in Madison or ne other city that has bigger problems to deal with, It would have been a one sentence rant in the crime section.
Well but oo in Janesville its the biggest thing since Brett Farve retired. "which is something that no one should care about, since i dont think hes did ne thing for ne one in this town."

I personally know Kevin, Mike, and Justin. They are all good kids. They just made a mistake. On the other hand i think that if the city of Janesville would have been on the ball ,removing the inventory and contacting the owner about the situation months ago. None of this would have happened. Way togo City . your always one step behind everything else in wisconsin.

Why are people blaming the Gazette for this. Why did they do to cause this to happen. I got to school with most if these kids. They are stupid enough to do this. It's no ones fault except the people who got arrested and the owner of the store.
If you don't like what the Gazette is printing in its paper, or putting on the website; then don't read it. Go read the Beloit Daily News paper and then complain about all the stuff they write in their paper, or the Wisconsin State Journal. If you have such a freaking problem with the Gazette or the Janesville Police Dept. then move. I'm 18 years old, and most of the people who are posting these comments are at least 35+ and acting 12 by trying to shift the blame. GET OVER IT!

Another reason that the JPD had to wait to clear the store is because they needed a search and seizure warrant. Who knows when they asked a judge for one, who knows how many times they tried to get in contact with the owner. But it takes a lot to get one to clear an old store.
Just get over the fact that these kids did wrong, that they acted stupid, and that they will have to pay for their actions

the last line, about the door being broken into once and then the second group just walked in isn't true... the door had been left open from the first 6 groups that went before these guys that night...

Instead of blaming anyone for this, shouldn't the owner be in jail on abandonment? Or neglecting a property? This is ridiculous! He is just as guilty as the kids that tried to break in there. I think it should be more than his liquor license. He should also be fined for every time that the JPD or RCSD had to go out there and waste their time!

Well we should all rest now knowing that the booze has been put into the police department for safe keeping. I am sorry that just was funny to me. The fact that there are laws that were stopping them then from cleaning out a building that the owner just up and left, you would think that it is called abandonment issuse!

It couldn't be cleared out until they found the owner, unfortunately...law enforcement has to actually follow the law too.
