Del Taco restaurant will open today on Milton Avenue
JANESVILLE Del Taco, a 24-hour Mexican restaurant, opens today at 2101 Morse St., next to the new Menards along Milton Avenue.
The 2,500-square-foot drive-through restaurant will employ about 60 people and is the first of five Wisconsin restaurants planned in Rock and Dane counties by DT Operations, a partnership of Joe Venable, Terry McGuire and Tom Lasse.
“Del Taco has been extremely popular in the Southwest,” Joe Venable said. “The experience has only gotten better for customers and stronger for franchisees. We are excited to bring a familiar taste to a new audience in Wisconsin.”
California-based Del Taco is the nation’s No. 2 Mexican quick-service chain with more than 500 locations. The 45-year-old chain offers a varied menu of Mexican items and American favorites that appeal to a broad range of tastes with a strong emphasis on quality and value.
Del Taco makes all menu items to order using fresh ingredients including freshly grated cheddar cheese, handmade salsa, bean dishes made from scratch and chicken grilled every hour. Del Taco serves more than 3.5 million customers each week.
As a business, Joe Venable said Del Taco is appealing because it has the highest sales volume of any Mexican quick-service restaurant.
“We’ve long had only one major player in this category, and we think there’s a market for another, especially one of the caliber of Del Taco,” Venable said.
“We think lovers of fast-food, especially of the Mexican variety, will find that Del Taco is better and different from anything else that’s available.”

You are so right on the mom and pop places going away. I own one in Janesville and because Best Buy or Walmart have a product for 2 dollars less, people go there. Then when service is needed, guess where they come! Yep you guessed it, right here to the mom and pop shop because all big box stores have "Customer No Service". Oh, and thank goodness for Dell and their internet sales because our repair department has many many of those to fix daily!!

I haven't been there yet. I think it goes without saying that when a business first opens, there are going to be "hitches in the giddy-up" until the staff has a better grip on the traffic patterns and the needs of the customers. My son went there and he had no issues, but said the same thing. They just opened. Give them a break or wait and go there after things settle down a little. If you go there expecting perfection and only have 20 minutes, I am sure you will probably be disappointed, but that is as much your fault as the restaurant's.
Patience is a virtue.

I was waited on by a woman of ample size who had a major altitude problem. I waited in the drive though for 15mins when I was the only one there. The burrito was size of a small broomstick handle, and I got all this for only 6bucks. Just a warning for anything thinking of going there

Janesville is a steak and potatoes kind of town. It's been fun to think about Jville getting a White Castle. Keep the jokes coming. A bag of hot sliders would be great about now. I think they'd go over well here once people caught on. But what we really need is for the folks who operate the Mediteranean Cafe on State street to open up here! Great inexpensive food. I was up there on Tuesday and there were students and working people lined up out the door. Of course Janesville is not diverse thinking enough to support that type of food. I'll stop by whenever I can in Madison. Oh, and how about a good Gyros place like Parthenon in Madison???

You’re dead on with the Whitewater Pier recommendation. It’s small, a little quirky, but you’ll never find a place with better, more attentive service, and the food is excellent. The store is a great place to pick place to pick up salmon, trout, &c. If you don’t see what you like, they can probably get it for you with a little advance notice. Very highly recommended!

If you want good local flavor, Milton has more per capita than Janesville. I stumbled across a great seafood place... Whitewater Pier. Not a huge place and definitely not upscale, but the menu is diverse and the food is excellent. Not only is the wait staff incredibly friendly, but the night we were there, the waiter actually sung a variety of ethnic folk songs as he served. Very unique and quirky place... Also, there is a fish market attached to it to. Good selection!

I’m not sure how Poutine (pronounced pooh-ten) wandered into this thread, it’s not a Mexican dish. It’s a Quebec concoction, though it’s widely available throughout Canada. One serving a week can harden your arteries inside of a month. Nasty stuff, and not really that tasty. Stick with chips (fries) and gravy, it’s very addictive and can convince you give up catsup. It is also a bit hard on the arteries, though.

Although he’d have my vote, unfortunately gazettefan *can’t* open a White Castle franchise:
“Unlike other fast food corporations like McDonald's or Taco Bell, you can't purchase a White Castle franchise in the US. The fast food restaurant chain is family-owned, and its parent company (White Castle System) maintains strict control over its restaurant operations in the 10 states they're located in. The few White Castle franchise opportunities are located internationally, which makes it difficult for someone in the US to enter the market.”
Maybe if we all wrote to WC headquarters, they might take a look at Janesville. Just bulldoze the Del Taco and put it there, you’d get tons of traffic off of I-90. Put up a big billboard for all the Chicago vacation traffic, “Last chance for sliders . . . Exit Now!”

Yes, intheloop-I think mid-80's. Yumm.
mommyopes: I will try that for sure. It’s not even far from me, and I never have been there. It’s funny-actually sad-that when I travel, I like the “safety” of chains-no scary surprises to budget or menu. But when I’m home I go to the same 3-4 places-probably for the same reasons, and because it seems-even on a relaxing night out-my time seems too limited to “experiment” with a new place. So I appreciate good tips like that. On the other hand, I like to experiment by attempting to reproduce some of the foods I’ve been introduced to when I do find something new. Whoever on here talked about being too cheap to want to spend over $5-that’s probably me (except make that $10-$15). But, I DO (or tell the tipper to) tip well, having made my living that way once upon a time. I believe most servers make about 1/2 minimum wage-but if they made minimum or more and tipping was unheard of-we'd pay a lot more for the food.

Red Lobster was where the asian place is, I remember going there a few times. It had alot of customers. There is some problem with the company that owns that build because several place have been there, and done well for few years, and then one day close. It is ironic that the Del Taco restaurant in Rockford is closed already. Must have been the bad location on Hy 173 between Home Depot and the new Menard's store in Machesny Park.

Beans aren't refried, they're refrito, meaning really fried, although, I'm pretty sure Fritos® are pretty well fried, too, judging by their wonderful crunchiness. Of course, this has nothing to do with the Del Taco story.

Why do mexican beans have to be refried? What always goes wrong the first time?

upnorthwi- if jvl residentsare so cheap how do you explain Texas Rdhouse Busy almost everynight? I went to ChiChi's all the time when they were open and I thought the quality of their food as pretty good. I grew up in CA and Del Taco was one of my Favs so I am glad that they are here.

The good restaurants don't last in Janesville because people in Jville are cheap! Before now the city had a great economy and they don't want to pay over $5 for a dinner unless you get free refills or if it's a buffet. That and the fact that the same place could open here as in Madison (Chichi's for example) and the quality wasn't as good. We drove to Madison often if we wanted a really good meal.

I think this is a time to remind the city of Janesville if you don't want the big chains, support your small mom and pop establishments. We still have plenty; and with the economy and food costs they could use the business. They have legacy and drive to offer this town as long as they can.

What if Janesville had a wood-fired pizza joint and served traditional Italian fare?
Any takers?

I had Del TACO for lunch today. The staff was friendly enough and the food was what you would expect from a fast food mexican place. Not bad over all!! I will go again sometime. And, the beef is not all greasy like Taco Bell.

It's both a blessing and a curse that Janesville is so close to Madison and Rockford, whose offerings abound in both good chain and non-chain offerings. But Janesville still has great local non-chain things like Peking, Fusion 5, El Jardin, and many more. Yet I'd like to see more of the upmarket "fast casual" chains like Panera Bread, Atlanta Bread, Chipotle, Qdoba, or something along those lines. Noodles and Company came and seems to be doing well. Also, I wasn't that excited about Golden Corral either. Even though this is 'Chainsville', I think we can do a bit better.

For Mexican, try Cozumel near Home Depot...for steak, go to Cherry's...for fish, that place next to the sports bar on Milwaukee Ave...for upscale, try Speakeasy, for greasy-ness, it's Spirits...for a short drive, go to the Butterfly or the Buckhorn...Italian, try...OK, not much in Janesville other than piza joints...my point is...

Troll Alert! Troll Alert! Looks like Jackson recruited smileyrn to his ranks. This was lesson number 1 for smiley-note the great similarity in their proposals.
With that being said, Del Taco had an interest in bringing their fare to Janesville, along with some jobs. I think, along with a welcome, they deserve the patience any new venture (with brand new employees) should get. If you must be first to be served, you might expect first day jitters and start-up problems. Don't add to those difficulties; be patient, or wait until another day. (I guess patience and wait don't go hand in hand, though). If the work is harder than the work at GM, as smiley suggests, please give them a break to-day, or get up and go away, to M********. (Maybe not as much after the initial week, though.)
As far as it being another fast food place-they're popular all over-someone likes them or they wouldn't be here.

i think taco bell could easily beat up del taco in a fight. the breaker would be whose side taco johns hops on. i think bell/johns combo would easily beat up del taco, but while del taco/johns could prolly beat up the bell, it would take a lot more effort, and while del taco/johns are recovering i can see that little dog delivering some nachos belle grande and totally reviving taco bell, who would end up winning the fight in the later rounds, mostly cuz theres no dog to bring the other two some nachos.

Maybe the people from GM will apply to work at Del Taco. Maybe they can get used to a low paying, hard working job like the rest of Janesville. If you want expensive sit down restaurants go to Madison or Rockford and spend $100 for 2 people to eat.....

maybe janesville city councel should focus on bringing in higher paying jobs I think we have plenty of food places here with plenty of low paying jobs.
bring in factorys that provide good wages and health care or janesville will soon be a low income town that cant afford to eat at theese places.

I went to this place yesterday to give it a chance and it was full of people (although the drive-thru wasn't working yet). Unfortunately, I stood in line for 10 minutes with the same woman and two children ahead of me the entire time (we were the only ones in line). I realize a place opening for the first time is going to have some start-up issues, but the guy who looked like maybe he was the manager merely glanced at me a couple of times as he fiddled with a register that appeared to not be working...not once did I get a "thank you for your patience, ma'am, but we'll be with you shortly." I ended up walking out while two people waited on the woman in front of me...it'll be awhile before I go back there...gimme Taco Bell any day!
I know you're new and all, but customer service should shine no matter what...wasn't feeling it.

Gazzete Story: May 7, 2013
The new MegaChain Burger restaurant has opened up on Milton Avenue this week. Janesville now has the distinction of having every chain restaurant available in the United States. Some residents question why there are not more non-chain restaurants available in Janesville. Local chefs reply that it is difficult to find enough people in Janesville willing to pay more than $8.00 for a meal unless it is an all you can buffet. Some Janesville residents note they are tired of three reataurants in town that don't feature a 1/2 pound burgers and free refills on soda. But not to worry Janesville, this week Applebee's has a $5 off coupon with the puchase of cheese fries.
