Warhawk softball team suffers first loss
An unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday lifted DePauw (Ind.) University to a 6-5 win over UW-Whitewater in an NCAA Division III women’s softball regional game.
The loss was the first for Whitewater (32-9) in the double-elimination tournament. The Warhawks play Wartburg (31-7) at noon today. Whitewater took a 5-2 lead over DePauw in the sixth inning on Suzanne Gersich’s three-run homer. Gersich also homered in the first inning and finished with all five RBIs.
Top-ranked DePauw (40-2) scratched across a run in the eighth. Ashley Bartlett singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Lauren Rees’ ground ball.
Jessica Stang suffered the loss, despite allowing only five hits and striking out three.
Orfordville Parkview graduate Amy Gahl went 2-for-4 for Whitewater.
