Once was not enough for UW-Whitewater at the double-elimination WIAC baseball tournament here Saturday.

The Warhawks had to win twice to earn the WIAC title and an automatic NCAA Division III tournament berth. Whitewater skipped past UW-Oshkosh, 5-4, in the semifinal but fell 3-0 to three-time defending champion UW-Stevens Point in the title game.

Whitewater (35-8) must wait until Monday morning to see if it will receive an NCAA tournament at-large berth.

Stevens Point (28-14) took a 2-0 lead on Doug Coe’s first-inning two-run homer off Whitewater starter Mike Jacobson. Point’s Brandon Scheidler hit Jacobson for a solo shot in the seventh for an insurance run.

Jacobson allowed three runs on seven hits for the loss. He walked one and notched three strikeouts through 7 2/3 innings.

The Warhawks had scoring threats snuffed in the seventh and ninth innings.

Point starter Garret Nix allowed four hits and posted nine strikeouts through eight innings. Reliever Jeff Zielke pitched a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.

Against Oshkosh, the Warhawks scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to eliminate the Titans. Whitewater scored the winning run on an Oshkosh fielding error.

The Warhawks trailed the Titans 4-0 after three innings and 4-2 after six innings. Whitewater pounded out 13 hits to five for Oshkosh.
