— UW-Whitewater’s baseball team is back in the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since winning the 2005 national championship.

The Warhawks, who won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title, received an at-large berth Monday to play in a double-elimination regional hosted by UW-Oshkosh at E.J. Schneider Field.

Second-seeded Whitewater (35-8) plays No. 5 St. Scholastica (32-4) of Minnesota at 1 p.m. Wednesday. In other first-round games Wednesday, No. 6 Knox (15-23) of the Midwest Conference takes on top-seeded St. Thomas, Minn. (32-7) at 10 a.m., and No. 3 Carthage (25-8) plays No. 4 UW-Oshkosh (29-9) at 4 p.m.

If Whitewater wins, its second game will be at 4 p.m. Thursday. If the Warhawks lose, they’ll play at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The regional is scheduled, weather permitting, to run through Saturday.

UW-Stevens Point (28-14), which won the WIAC tournament and received the conference’s automatic NCAA bid, has been assigned to a regional hosted by Augustana at Moline, Ill.

The eight regional champions advance to the Division III World Series, scheduled for May 23-27, at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.
