— Wet conditions in Traxler Park have forced the Memorial Day parade route and location of the holiday’s main ceremony to be changed.

“We knew we would have to alter the route if Traxler Park didn’t dry out,’’ said parade organizer Tom Stehura, who also is a member of the Janesville Patriotic Society and the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

That’s what’s happened after the Rock River flooded this spring, soaking an area of the downtown park that includes Veterans Plaza.

“There’s still some standing water there,’’ Stehura said Wednesday.

More rain is forecast Sunday and Monday, and again Friday, May 23, he said.

Even without more rain, Stehura doubted the ground at Traxler Park would dry enough for many people to be able to walk on it by Memorial Day.

The holiday parade, which begins at 11 a.m., still will start at the corner of Dodge and High streets and move onto East Milwaukee Street. It will then continue south on Main Street and end at Court Street.

The main ceremony will now take place at noon in Lower Courthouse Park at the corner of Main and Court streets.
