Janesville Craig High’s baseball team continued its winning ways Thursday.

The Cougars banged out 13 hits en route to a 9-1 Big Eight Conference win over Madison East at Riverside Park.

Craig (11-8, 8-7) has won five of its last six games, including five straight in the conference.

“I thought we played our best game of the year tonight,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “We got good pitching, we hit the ball hard and our defense was solid.

“If you throw out the Fort Atkinson game, we’ve been playing pretty good baseball the last few weeks. It starts with being aggressive at the plate and swinging at good pitches. Those are two things we weren’t doing earlier in the year.”

Craig jumped on the Purgolders with four runs in the first three innings. Starting pitcher Ben Yaucher helped his cause by going 3-for-3, including two doubles and three RBIs. Kaleb Eichman also drove in two runs, while Keith Wright finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

“It’s nice to get production all the way through the lineup,” Herbst said. “And we’re also starting to get the clutch hit when we need it.”

Yaucher went the first four innings in picking up the win. The senior lefthander allowed only one run and struck out four. Brett Fredricks pitched the final three innings to pick up the save. Fredricks, a junior, allowed only one hit and struck out two.

“They both threw well and got ahead of hitters,” Herbst said of Yaucher and Fredricks. “East is a pretty good hitting team, but those two kept them off balance.

“It was an outstanding effort by everybody tonight.”

Craig wraps up the conference and regular season Tuesday at Madison La Follette.

n West 10, Parker 0—The visiting Vikings managed only two hits off the Regents’ Max Jaffe in losing the Big Eight Conference game. Jaffe, making his first varsity start, struck out three and walked two.

Parker (4-11, 4-9) starter Tyler Teubert allowed 10 runs, but only four were earned as the Vikings committed a season-high six errors.

“We got two hits off of what I would call an average pitcher, and we had six errors,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “That’s the game in a nutshell.

“For some reason, we’re just not swinging the bats very well right now.”

West got all the runs it needed on Robbie Schumacher’s two-run homer in the second.

Teubert took the loss despite walking only one batter and striking out four.

“It seems like every error we had put somebody on base for them,” Martin said. “Tyler didn’t actually pitch that bad.

“The bottom line is that West came to play and we didn’t. It’s very discouraging.”

Parker will play at Madison La Follette on Saturday at 10 a.m. The game will be played at MATC.
