The new Menards Mega Store in Janesville, located at the site of the former Janesville Oasis and Ramada Inn near the intersection of Interstate 90 and Milton Avenue, will open for business May 20.

The new Menards Mega Store in Janesville, located at the site of the former Janesville Oasis and Ramada Inn near the intersection of Interstate 90 and Milton Avenue, will open for business May 20.

— After months of planning, demolition, the moving of a sacred cow and finally construction, the new Menards Mega Store will open Tuesday in Janesville.

At 250,000 square feet, the new store sits at the site of the former Janesville Oasis and Ramada Inn near the intersection of Interstate 90 and Milton Avenue. It’s more than twice the size of the existing Menards on Pontiac Drive.

“We’re fired up and ready to go,” said Jeff Tucholke, the store’s general manager.

For the past five weeks, employees have been staffing the old store and getting the new store ready for Tuesday’s opening, which Tucholke said has been a “major undertaking.”

New product has been arriving daily for the last there weeks.

Recent sales at the Pontiac Drive store have put a major dent in that store’s inventory, and that’s by design, said Tucholke, who has managed Menards’ operation in Janesville for more than 14 years.

“Pretty much everything in the new store will be new product,” he said, noting the inefficiencies and timing issues associated with packing inventory at the existing store and moving it to the new one.

The new store will add about 50 people to Menards’ payroll in Janesville, he said. About 130 staff the Pontiac Drive store, which will stay open for about 10 days after the new store opens so product can be moved out and fixtures are removed.

Employees have been trained on the new product lines and the store’s new layout. They’ll get additional training when customers start showing up. Tucholke said one of the store’s credos is to “smile and walk guests to the product.”

The new store will feature 40,000 more products than the old, and shoppers will navigate wider aisles, he said.

The store also will feature a garden center as well as grocery and pet items. A full-size lumberyard wraps around the store’s exterior to the rear.

“Everyone should come out and see all of the new things we have in this beautiful store,” Tucholke said. “We plan to provide the best in home improvement products and services for everyone in the area for many years to come.”

The family-owned Menards started in 1960 and now operates 239 home improvement stores in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio and South Dakota.

Del Taco, a Mexican restaurant, recently opened near the new Menards, and city officials are working to attract other stores to the area.

They continue their search for a developer for the existing Menards’ property, which first opened in 1984.

One developer expressed interest earlier this year but has since withdrawn it.

I was there yesterday. I thought it was great. Although, I don't think it is a "run in and out" kind of store. I like that everything is more spread out. The old store was way too crowded.

No more complaints from me, garyprimer, at least not the jest for fun ones. I’ve learned my lesson. Next complaint you will get from me will be - - serious. I’m thinking of making an alter ego for jokiness-RUJoking. But that sounds the same to me, now that I look at it.
I’m anxious to see the “grocery” section at Menard’s. I imagine it’s more of a “side trip” while buying nails than a destination all by itself. Anyway-I’ve yet to have the pleasure, but did do the roundabout before they were open-piece of cake when no other cars are present. Before I do it for real I was hoping Testerrific/Janesvillehero/jackson1(a softer and gentler jackson) would leave some pointers for those of us more familiar with small town dirt roads.<----(last line written by RUJoking).

Sorry, I mean't "old Menards".

Just confirmed that it is being referred to as "Splash".

It is to become a water park including slides and a wave pool. Opening in 2010!

I doubt that the new Menards will be changed into anything. Surely,(if I can call you Shirley), you are referring to the former location.

The new Menards is very nice and is a big improvement over the old store. I especially like the fact that they don't have things piled to the ceiling like the Home Depot does. I was afraid that it would just be another HD, but it is more shopper friendly. You might guess that I am not a big fan of HD. That's just me, I need to run in and buy stuff and don't have all day to wander through a huge store. I just have to figure out where everything is. It will be nice not to have to go out to the yard to get a few 2x4's or a sheet of plywood. I'm not sure about the frozen pizzas. I guess you could nail them to the wall.

I have solid sources saying that the new Menards is going to become a Water Park, close in size and design to Magic Waters.

I'd like to see a Bally Total Fitness go in at the old Menards building... THE JAC is okay but Bally's has more going on at better prices.

Or, like a few others said, a rollerskating rink would be nice. There's already plenty of parking and there could be a nice lounge area or something in the upstairs part of the building.

upnorthwi-I was kidding, I was not serious, I was playing, I was joking about the reference he made jokingly (apparently) about people complaining about minor grammar and other errors in other people's posts...didn't you notice I added this after my comment to garyprimer: "<----(not a genuine complaint)"?
My guess is, if/when he saw it, he would know I was joking-I've done it before. He's a funny guy and easy to have that kind of exchange with. You didn't thoroughly read my post-or his either-and that's when misunderstandings can happen. (Unless you were joking, too?)

Garyprimer, "Any complaints?" is not a complete sentence, and your name should be a proper noun so it should be capitalized. No complaints otherwise. How bout U? <----(not a genuine complaint)
Can't wait until the new Menards is open. I thought it was already open several times when I drove past because of all the cars there. Glad I noticed the signs before I tried to walk in like I almost did recently at another store that hadn't opened yet but had a full parking lot.

my poor spelling and I would hate tobe 2cents kid,i'd get beat daily for my bad spelling.
I quit commenting on here along time ago, because every time I did I got ripped apart for spelling or grammer. I'm not proud of my poor spelling but that doesn't mean i'm completly stupid, or for that matter anyone that makes an error.Get over the spelling errors and focus on the comments most are interesting even if words are spelled wrong or a period is out of place.

Menard's is not union. I worked at Menard's for 1 1/2 years and very underpaid. You have to take tests on a computer in order to get a raise and then it's a dime after I think 3 mos. then the next is a whole 5 cents!! I passed my tests but I know people who were tested on areas that had nothing to do with their particular job and they failed...no raise for you. Cruddy place to work. John is cheap, that's why he can build so many stores.

I'm kinda curious to see how the traffics going to be over there. Everyone was freaking out about Walmart, and that isn't as bad as everyone thought- but have you seen the mazes you gotta drive just to go in there? I went to Del Taco Friday and just to get out of that parking lot I had to circle the lot. Good luck during busy seasons in that area!

4HMom, I absoulutely love the idea your child had for the old Menards. Do you know anyone that has money that could pull it off successfully? It is in a prime location, being right off the interstate and all-- in the event of another winter pile up.

I'm looking forward to shopping at the new Menards but I will NOT be patronizing the new Del Taco again. I had my first and last meal there earlier this week. Actually I bought two menu items, took bites out of each and threw them away. With grocery and restaurant prices soaring I rarely throw food away but the food was that bad. The portion size was tiny, food quality was extemely poor, and the items were cold and tasteless. Come on, Janesville can we try to get a decent fast food restaurant in this town? How about one of those Long John Silvers/A & W combination restaurants? My kids love both and it would be a welcome change from another taco shop! We actually look for this restaurant in other states when we're traveling.
