— UW-Whitewater’s baseball team is one victory from a berth in the NCAA Division III World Series after slipping past the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), 4-1 in 10 innings, in a regional semifinal here Friday.

Whitewater (38-8) faces St. Scholastica (35-5) at noon today. If St. Scholastica (Minn.) wins, the teams will determine the double-elimination regional championship and national qualifier at 3:30 p.m. today.

The Warhawks defeated St. Scholastica in the first round of the tournament, 7-4, and have gone 3-0 in the regional. St. Scholastica has come back through the losers’ bracket with three straight victories, including wins over Carthage (9-4) and St. Thomas (7-1) on Friday.

Whitewater scored three runs in the top of the 10th to gain its victory over St. Thomas. Mike Kenseth ripped an RBI single, and Ben Kuhlmann popped a two-run single for what became the final score.

Mike Jacobson, the Warhawks’ starting pitcher, set the Tommies down in order in the 10th to notch the victory. Jacobson allowed one run on four hits, while notching six strikeouts in going the distance.

St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Kevin Zalnis and Kenseth each committed infield errors to allow the unearned run.

Whitewater’s Joe Munn scored on Kenseth’s sacrifice fly in the fifth to tie it at 1-1.
