Deputies to crack down on speeders
JANESVILLE Drivers who speed in Rock County better watch out.
The Rock County Sheriff's Office is receiving a $15,000 state grant for extra patrol and new equipment to crackdown on fast drivers, according to a sheriff's office news release.
In 2007, speed-related crashes killed 251 people in Wisconsin and injured nearly 11,000 others, according to the state Department of Transportation.
"We are striving to get drivers to comply voluntarily with the posted speed limits and other traffic laws in order to prevent crashes," Sheriff Bob Spoden said in the news release.
"Our goal is not to write more speeding tickets.
"However, if voluntary compliance fails, we will not hesitate to enforce speed limits and other traffic laws," he said.
"A speeding ticket costs hundreds of dollars," he said, "but the real price you pay for exceeding speed limits is endangering your life and the lives of everyone else on the road."

Klick by the way, California has the highest amount of drunk driving arrests. Check your facts... blogs are not a good resource for that! Wisconsin is in the top ten, which doesn't say much for our state, I would agree!

Lul, still waiting for your facts and figures on drunk driving versus speeding on killing people on Wisconsin's roadways? Where did you get them so I can look for myself! Wisconsin number one for drunk driver's Klick, I may agree with that point, but that might be because we are one of the few states where a first offense is similiar to a parking ticket...not a crime.

Lul, you forgot to comment on your generalizations about "COPS". I am sure both you and Klick have NEVER gone 26mph in a 25mph zone, or never had a SINGLE beer or GLASS of wine with dinner or what have you and driven! If you haven't then, kudos! Give me a break! I am sure your parents taught you well Klick, not the point. My comments were more directed towards lul! I am still waiting for the list of cops that let their friends off from Lul, since he seems to be in the "know'.

If you drive HWY 26 between Milton and Janesville watch your speed. For the past three weeks I've seen patrol cars with vehicles pulled over nearly every single day. It appears to me that stretch of road is being targeted by police. On some occassions there have been two patrol cars each with a vehicle pulled over.

One thing that I would love to see in this city is a more efficient cab system. A lot of people out drinking drive to and from bars, say from Tremors to the Watering Hole. Why does Janesville have virtually no effective cabbie system? I'm not excusing the drunk drivers or speeders, but I do think that if there was a more efficient cab system in Janesville, a lot of people would use it. I called "call me a cab" one night, and was told the wait time would be between two and two and a half hours. Ridiculous.

Tom, yeah the cars are more capable of handling higher speeds. But the drivers are not. Either they are involved in WI's pastime (DUI), reading, talking on the phone, using the laptop, texting, fiddling with the nav system, putting on makeup, shaving, turning around to talk with back seat passengers, listening to mp3 players with headphones on and a bunch of other things they shouldnt be doing while driving.
Also the lack of quality driving instructions and test thats so damn easy a 12 yr old could pass it.
But I agree with a few other posts, they should be coming down harder on the losers known as drunk drivers.

Maybe if the speed limits were set to reflect the 21st century automobile, instead of the mid 20th century autos, there would be better compliance. But more compliance means less revenue... so I guess we'll just have to live with the 1950's mindset.. You do know that 35 mph speeds kill todays automatic trans, .At that speed they shift between 3rd & 4th gears it's called "hunting" for shift points.

Voluntary compliance is not "so far gone". It's alive and well. Sometimes we need to go elsewhere in order to appreciate what we have right here. I think strategically placed permanent speed boards work, as long as there's not so many of them that people start ignoring them. I'm totally against cameras of any sort. We are a nanny state only if we let the government do their job without Citizen oversight, and a strong sense of liberty. It's the law of nature. It's not wrong governments become this way, it's wrong that we didn't keep them in check when we have the awesome power to do so.

Voluntary compliance is so far gone that it is a joke, and not the funny kind. Sheriff's Deputies seldom see this because most drivers are aware of their presence and and comply, surrounding the patrol car with a sea of law abiding drivers for as far as the eye can see. Try driving 55 on the highway without the patrol car in the mix and you find that you are subjecting yourself to potential and actual road rage and a series of extremely dangerous passing maneuvers by other drivers that will often force you to brake defensively and pull over on the shoulder to avoid an inevitable collision.
