ELKHORN — The Elkhorn campus of Gateway Technical College is getting a facelift.

The technical college board on Thursday approved a $450,000 remodeling project to upgrade a 6,600-square-foot space to more closely simulate working conditions in the health care industry.

“It will allow students a modern facility that is patterned after actual facilities and situations, giving them a real-world feel to their training,” said board Vice Chair Fred Burkhardt.

The money comes from the capital improvement budget, a spokesperson for the college said.

Students in the medical assistant, nursing assistant and community pharmacy technician programs will use the remodeled space, which will include “labs” with mock exam rooms, hospital beds and a pharmacy counter.

Faculty offices also will be integrated into the space, allowing students to practice their skills during extended hours.

“This really will help us grow,” said Dean of Health Occupation Michael O’Donnell.

As a significant portion of population continues to age, more and more trained workers are needed, he said, especially those that work in physician offices, pharmacies and long-term care facilities.

“If you read any labor statistics, the need for health care workers always is in the top five,” O’Donnell said. “It’s supported by the data that’s out there … Health care is going to be a growth industry.

“There seems to be an unlimited demand (for health care workers).”

The health-care programs at Gateway Technical College prepare students to work in those high-demand fields, he said, and with upgraded facilities, students will be better prepared for the real world.

“In an uncertain economy, health care is a really good career choice for students,” O’Donnell said.

The project is a result of a commissioned study group of Walworth County residents, which in 2007 recommended changes to Gateway Technical College’s programs to better serve the needs of the region.

The college also is considering expanding its programming in manufacturing, hospitality and energy.
