— The Evansville School Board unanimously appointed a new board member Monday night to fill the vacancy left by the death of former member Art Phillips.

Sharon Skinner, 424 S. First St., Evansville, will complete the term ending in spring and said she plans to run for election in April, board President Michael Pierick said.

She will be sworn in at the board's Dec. 8 meeting.

Skinner has lived in Evansville for 16 years and has two children in seventh and eighth grades and one son who already graduated, Pierick said.

Skinner has school board experience, which Pierick said is unusual for a candidate in Evansville. She was elected to a local council that oversaw one school of about 1,400 students within the Chicago School District. The critical issues she faced on the council were safety, gangs, drugs and weapons in schools, Pierick said.
