Monroe High School’s defending WIAA Division 2 state champions gave Milton a decisive introduction to Badger South girls basketball.

The Cheesemakers started fast and didn’t let up until early in the fourth quarter as they rolled to a 68-52 victory in the visiting Red Hawks’ Badger debut Tuesday night.

Monroe (2-0) bolted to a 12-0 lead and pushed its advantage to 62-35 before substituting liberally in the final quarter.

Ashley Hermanson led Monroe with 22 points, including eight in the opening quarter. Gwen Sutter scored 10 of her 16 points in the third quarter. Jamie Armstrong added 10 points for the Cheesemakers.

Amber Davis had a game-high 24 points for Milton (0-1).

n Monona Grove 49, Fort Atkinson 44—Jessica Schmitz scored 16 of her game-high 26 points in the first half as the visiting Silver Eagles (1-1) built a 28-17 lead en route to winning a Badger South opener.

Fort cut its deficit to two points in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome Monona Grove’s early advantage.

Amanda Brus scored 12 points for Fort (0-1), while teammates Jessie Truman and Ralissa Nelson had 10 apiece.

n Edgewood 50, Oregon 47—Madison Edgewood had a fast start but also needed a strong finish to get past host Oregon in a Badger South opener.

The Crusaders jumped an 18-7 lead in the first quarter, then overcame a 42-36 deficit with a 16-5 surge in the final period.

Becky Gifford, a 5-8 senior, led Edgewood with 20 points. Bryn Atkinson, a 5-10 junior, had 16 for Oregon.

n Mount Horeb 54, Stoughton 50—Brianna Bower scored nine of her 18 points in the second quarter to give the Vikings a 27-24 lead at the half, but Stoughton couldn’t hold on in a Badger nonconference crossover game.

Mount Horeb had it tied at 42-42 after three quarters and took the lead for good with a 12-8 advantage in the final period.
