Santa trading sleigh for steam train
Podcast Episode

EDGERTON Santa Claus is coming to town next week, but he won't be arriving by sleigh.
The "Santa Steam Train," led by a 1913 steam locomotive, will bring the jolly old elf into town Friday, Dec. 5, for a visit Saturday, Dec. 6.
But this is no ordinary visit from Santa, said Kathy Citta, administrator of the Edgerton Area Chamber of Commerce. The chamber has planned two days of activities, including a movie screening, free refreshments, musical performances and a pancake breakfast to entertain visitors from far and near.
The chamber is expecting thousands of visitors from all over southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois for the event, Citta said. She has even heard from a family of train enthusiasts planning to come from Dubuque, Iowa, to see the locomotive.
Organizers enthuse the event has something for everyone: Kids get to see Santa and his friends, while adults can enjoy the historic train and other entertainment.
"Everybody's a child at heart," said Scott Cramer, who is helping raise money for the event. "With the hard economic times, a lot of folks are … truly looking for a distraction from reality, and here you go. Santa's coming to town."
The Wisconsin & Southern Railroad and 1003 Operations, owner of the steam engine and caboose, bring the train to a few places each year free of charge. But the chamber is spending more than $7,000 on marketing and event logistics, Citta said.
Still, the chamber is glad to bring a free event to the community, officials said.
"Money is tight," Cramer said. "This being a free event should help a lot of families."
The chamber also sees the event as a marketing opportunity. A visit from the steam train last year drew more than 4,000 visitors to Plymouth, four times what organizers were expecting, said Jerry Thompson, who organized the visit there. The train is making a return visit to Plymouth a week after it comes to Edgerton.
Citta has been amazed by residents' willingness to help out, she said. A local woman volunteered to play Mrs. Claus, and the local Rotary group offered to provide security.
But Burt Mall, a partner in 1003 Operations, isn't surprised the train visit is stirring up so much excitement. The historic Soo Line engine appeals to children and adults alike, he said.
"There is something rather, what's the word, captivating about it when you see the live steam and the smoke and the whistle," he said.

SPONSORS SOUGHT
The Edgerton Area Chamber of Commerce is still looking for corporate sponsors for the Santa Steam Train visit.
The visit is free, but the chamber is spending more than $7,000 for marketing, decorations and event logistics, Administrator Kathy Citta said.
The chamber will include a list of sponsors in a brochure given to visitors, and donors who give $1,000 or more will have their names displayed on the caboose, Citta said.
For more information, call Citta at (608) 884-4408.

lydia,
You are such a negative person. How do you live with yourself. Here is a community that is trying to better itself by doing things like this and you never have anything good to say. For someone that has it out for Edgerton you sure spend a lot of your energy commenting on it.

Funny.....I thought this was a forum for writing comments about articles, not being unkind to others. Rule number three in the agreement. Just in case you throw that stone back. I'm commenting on a situation that is very apparent. Edgerton is empty.....just a wide spot in the road.

How exciting! I just love living in this part of the country!!! I raised my family here in Milton and now have three grandkiddies. 8, 7 and 4 years old. This is the very best age for a grandma!
We've gone to the Thresheree, the Milton chicken barBQ, the local fire works celebration, Pancake breakfast at the Milton Fire station, and the kids got to ride the fire truck. How awesome to watch them enjoy the experience!!!
My husband is quite the train enthusiast! We have a train track that runs around the ceiling of our 4 season porch! We are just 2 blocks from tracks... In the heat of the summer, we can hear the different melodies of the trains, as they enter town.
We will definitely be attending this event with grandbabies in tow. For those with the negative attitude about small town living... I promise you, as you age, you'll be anxious to find the simpler things in life.

Good for the Chamber to spend $7000 for marketing. Just what are they marketing? When people get to Edgerton and there is nothing there. They go away and tell at least three friends "don't go the Edgerton there is absolutely nothing there, unless you want to drink".....hmmmmmmm.....good marketing.

this should go thru our farm, we love the trains going by!, if it comes via whitewater, a good spot to get pictures will be west of milton on vickerman road, in milton at old depot on the east side of town, where the line crosses County M west of milton. the lane on our farm (our secret) and many, many other places...

Sorry, that didn't work. Enter Edgerton in the google map search box and scroll out a bit. That should show the rail line running North between Hy 26 and I-90 to Milton and then West to Edgerton.

Soo 1003 is keeping warm in the WSOR round house at 5 points.
I would guess it would go up the main to Milton, hang a left and proceed to Edgerton --
that's the only way to get there by rail.

Mark707- not sure where to find the route, but this train is kept in Heartland at the Auto Museum normally, so I think it should be coming from that way (or whitewater way). This is my FAVORITE train!! Everytime it comes thru we hear it and go see it! Even with the house closed up, you cannot mistake the sound of it's whistle. It is AWESOME! Go see it for sure!! Arrivals and departures are the best, with all the sounds and steam!!! Take a camera! It's worth it!

Can someone get the routing for the train? It would be very cool to see the steam locomotive going down the tracks on it's way to or from Edgerton. Is it going to be at the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad yards in Janesville and going to or coming from there?
