— The Janesville School Board expelled three students Tuesday. They are:

-- A high school student, accused of negligent handling of burning materials on a school bus, expelled through the end of the 2009-10 school year. He or she may earn an early return, in summer school 2009, by continuing with counseling and completing the Truancy Abatement and Transitional Education program, if space is available.

If allowed to return early, the student must maintain satisfactory attendance, schoolwork and behavior, and be restricted to the school building for lunch.

-- A middle school student, accused of possessing marijuana with intent to sell on school grounds, expelled through the end of summer school 2010. She or he may earn early reinstatement starting in September 2009 after completing boot camp, undergoing an alcohol/drug assessment, completing the Prime for Life anti-alcohol/drug course, and completing a homebound education program.

If reinstated early, the student must comply with the same conditions as the student noted above.

-- A high school student, accused of distributing marijuana on school grounds, expelled through the end of the 2009-10 school year. He or she may earn reinstatement starting second semester of this school year after undergoing an alcohol/drug assessment and completing the Truancy Abatement and Transitional Education program, if space is available.

The same reinstatement conditions apply as with the two students listed above.

This brings to 15 the number of students expelled this school year, compared with six at this time last year.

Expulsions are up because schools are working with the police now to "investigate" all crime. You see, when crime statistics go down, they need some way to justify their jobs.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of families who don't parent their children and don't expect moral behavior out of them. As sad as an expulsion is, I ask for consideration of all those kids who are in school doing what they are expected to do...learn. They should not be continually subjected to the poor behavior of people who choose not to do the right thing. After having spent my career working in a school, I would venture to guess that everyone had to put up with a long list of poor choices by these students before an expulsion was even considered. I hope that the school board continues to make those tough expulsion choices and then stands by their decisions. I know I don't have all the answers, but perhaps it's time that society stop tolerating poor parenting and poorly behaved citizens.

these are all very serious charges and reason for expelling. Very sad to see people so young making some very bad choices.
