Janesville businessman is conduit for local AIDS Network benefit
JANESVILLE Much of what Dave Mansur does involves real estate.
“I help people sell, buy and build,’’ said the Janesville businessman.
But more recently, the Janesville native has taken a proactive role in helping the community.
“If I’m going to make a difference, I better get at it,’’ Mansur said.
He did by searching for a local association/nonprofit that deals with the marginalized in life. What struck a chord with him was the AIDS Network of Rock County.
His passion to be part of giving back was enhanced by his ability to rally people to a cause.
Together and in a short time, the small group he led organized Bells and Bows, a holiday benefit for the AIDS Network of Rock County that will take place Monday in conjunction with World AIDS Day.
“People are hurting here in our community, and we can help,’’ Mansur said.
But what amazed him even more was the giving mood people were in, while clouds of a struggling economy loomed overhead.
“They understood about getting something done in our community that is significant,’’ Mansur said.
In less than two months, Mansur and his group raised $15,000 in pledges and sponsorships, not including volunteer labor. Ticket sales are expected to bring in at least another $5,000.
“In this environment and our economy, I’m blown away by people’s generosity and willingness to serve. I’m just so touched,’’ he said.
Their success, Mansur said, can be attributed to his experience of organizing the AIDS Walk in Rock County last year that raised in excess of $10,000 and his ability to bring together people who are as passionate about this cause as he is.
“We are very excited to be the beneficiary of this new Rock County fundraiser and grateful to the many volunteers in this community who have worked diligently to make this event possible,’’ said AIDS Executive Director Karen Dotson, in a news release.
In 1988, the World Health Organization designated Dec. 1 a date each year dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Since then AIDS has killed more than 25 million people with another 33 million people living with HIV.
“It is estimated more than 25 percent of the people who are affected with HIV don’t even know it,’’ Dotson said.
Although event proceeds will be used to increase awareness and prevention activities, the majority of the money will be used for client services, Mansur said.
“It’s one life touching another life, over and over,’’ he said. “What a great time to invest back in our community.’’
