— Janesville Craig High School’s girls tennis team did double time and then some in the WIAA Division 1 subsectional meet Monday at Palmer Park.

The Cougars advanced all three doubles teams and Nicole Timblin at Flight 2 singles to Wednesday’s sectional at Lake Geneva Badger. Janesville Parker advanced a doubles team and Lauren Brooks in Flight 3 singles.

Craig earned 18 points to lead subsectional. Parker was fourth in the eight-team field with 12 points.

Those points carry over to determine a sectional champion and qualifier for the Oct. 24-25 state team tournament at Nielsen Stadium in Madison.

Qualifiers from the Craig Subsectional join those from today’s Madison East Subsectional to form the sectional field. The sectional’s top four in Flight 1 singles and doubles will be joined by the Flight 2 champions in qualifying for the Oct. 16-18 individual state tournament, also at Nielsen Stadium.

“The doubles teams have been coming through somewhere, somehow this season,” Craig coach Camilla Owen said. “That was nice to have all three advance.”

Timblin, a senior, defeated Katherine Neshek of Elkhorn, 7-6 (6), 7-5, in a qualifying match for the sectional berth.

“Nicole beat the No. 2 seed, and that was nice,” Owen said. “It’s Nicole’s first time to sectionals. Every year she was always one match away.’’

In doubles qualifying matches, Craig’s Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken defeated Ameile Bailey and Corissa Griffith of Lake Geneva Badger, 6-1, 6-2, in Flight 1.

In Flight 2 doubles, the Cougars’ Olivia Ehlers and Emily Reshower defeated Kyria Smith and Alison Thies of Elkhorn, 6-2, 6-0. In Flight 3, Craig’s Maggie Bolton and Laudan Rezai defeated Taylor Weis and Kelsey Erickson of Monroe, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

For Parker, Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger defeated Sarah Morgan and Alexis Anderson of Beloit, 6-1 6-4, in Flight 1. Brooks defeated Craig’s Nicole Gutzman, 7-5, 7-5.

“Brooks has been playing very well this year,” Parker coach Bill Peyer said. “Nicole (Gutzman) is a very good player. It’s just that Lauren was a little bit better today.”

Peyer said Theisen and Zeilinger received a good draw and capitalized on it.

“They played as expected,” Peyer said. “They played a good match.’’
