Police seek information about assault suspects
WHITEWATER UW-Whitewater police are seeking three men who groped a young woman on campus Thursday night.
According to Police Chief Matt Kiederlen:
An 18-year-old UW-Whitewater freshman was walking through the parking lot adjacent to the Williams Center on Warhawk Drive at 11:56 p.m., when she was approached by three men she didn’t know.
The men surrounded the young woman, grabbed her and fondled her over her clothes. She was able to break away from the men, and the men didn’t follow her.
The woman was not injured and reported the incident to UW-Whitewater police later that night.
The woman described the men as in their late 20s or early 30s. One man had a thin build, and another man had a muscular build. The woman didn’t get a good look at the third.
The woman told police she saw the men walk north.
“While UW-Whitewater is a safe environment, things can and do happen,” Kiederlen said in a news release issued Wednesday. “It is important that we all remain aware of our surroundings, know where we are and what our options are.”
Students are reminded to take precautions when walking on campus at night, including walking with friends and walking in lighted areas, he said.
UW-Whitewater police encourage students to contact them if they see suspicious activity.
“We would much rather investigate 100 incidents where nothing happens than miss the one where something does,” Kiederlen said.
Anyone with information about the incident Thursday can call UW-Whitewater police at (262) 472-4660. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the Walworth County Crime Stoppers Hotline at (262) 723-2677.

Excel - unfortunately, the Safe Walk program has been eliminated. To substitute for it (not very well...) more police officers are walking or biking. But I don't think it compares to having 2 people walk with you. The police aren't always going to be where you need them to be at the right time.

Screw that, not walking alone at night. The only ones that should not have been out walking were the predators out looking for prey. normal citizens should be allowed to do their business.
Teach your daughters to scream, use nails, yell, etc. Get DNA samples when you rake nails against their eyes.

As a father of 3 daughters and with a sister that is going to college, I would feel better if the police gave a better description of the suspects. I hope that political correctness, if that is the reason for not listing a race, doesn't trump our daughters safety...

And if it was your daughter, would you accuse her of making the story up to get attention or hide something that she'd done?

This certainly could be the start of a potentially serious situation on the campus which I'm sure that the authorities will investigate further. New and continuing students need to be cautious. On the other hand, I don't think there should be major panic or fear on campus. We aren't seeing the whole police report, but the story given makes me hope that this isn't a situation similar to that in Madison just a few springs ago.

No, it wouldn't be. The woman reported being groped. When suspects are arrested for a crime they are presumed innocent until proven guilty so the charge is an allegation. The victim of a crime is not alleged to be a victim.

They should also mention the service they have where someone can call and have and escort walk them so they are not walking alone.

That is a pretty skimpy description, no clothing, hair color, race etc...

Although it's true UW-Whitewater is generally a safe place, I wouldn't recommend walking by yourself at almost midnight. That's too late to be out walking alone. Thankfully this woman wasn't injured and she was able to get away.
