— A proposed wastewater storage pit near Highway 43 in Darien Township still is waiting on attorneys and nearby local officials to come to agreements.

Steve Walter, owner of Walter & Son Waste Hauling, N3368 Highway 14, Darien, has applied to the town for a rezone and a conditional-use permit to build a lagoon about 1,000 feet north of the intersection of Interstate 43 and Highway 14.

The interstate separates the village and township.

The Town of Darien Planning Commission on Tuesday night tabled a decision on applications for the 2.7-acre lagoon, member Dale Wheelock said.

The commission has discussed and tabled the issue for several months.

Town officials are waiting for an agreement between the town’s and Walter’s attorneys. The agreement would add additional legal protection for the town on top of the conditional-use permit, Wheelock said.

The town also is waiting for village of Darien officials to weigh in on the matter. The village board Tuesday night sat in on and listened to the town planning commission meeting. The board met afterwards and decided the village attorney and engineer should meet with Walter’s attorney and engineer to study the issue to advise the board.

The village board Tuesday night also instructed village administrator Marc Dennison to get preliminary costs, borrowing options and plans for repairs to the village sewer system from financial advisors Ehlers & Associates.

Maybe he should consider getting hooked up to the local wastewater treatment facility.

Are the soils and underlying bedrock conducive to a septic pit? If it is, and the eviro-impact statments have been done, then what is the issue? Are there homes in the immediate area?

If this proposed lagoon is to have untreated industrial waste, or any waste for that matter, in it you will have odor problems. There are two solutions to the odor: 1)Waste Treatment, or 2) Cover the entire lagoon.

The “cheese guy” spoke for the lagoon at the last two meetings. He wants it so he doesn’t have to build one himself.

It has nothing to do with Darien sewers. He has his own service. The man that wants the cheese factory is fighting it so you know who will win. Some board members spent around 3 hrs with cheese guy before the meeting so the other guy don!t have a chance.

The use of the pit was described in more detail in the article in an earlier issue.

It's to store sewage.

The wording was "wastewater storage pit". It would probably permit the business to handle more volume with the same equipment.

So would this be a retention pond designed to collect surface runoff, or is this part of a wastewater treatment plan?
