Janesville Police Department arrests can be viewed at www.ci.janesville.wi.us. Click on "City Government" and then click on "Police."

— People can see who was arrested in Janesville on the Janesville Police Department's Web site.

Adult arrests including the person's name, home address, the arrest date and reason for the arrest will be updated every two weeks, Dave Moore, acting police chief, said.

Information such as mental or alcohol commitments will not be available, he said.

The police department decided to publish its arrests after discussions with residents in the Fourth Ward and Look West neighborhoods, Moore said.

Arrests are public record and always have been available upon request, he said. The Web site will make the information more accessible.

"I'm sure some in the community will think we're disclosing too much, but we really try to keep this organization as transparent as we can," Moore said. "I think the benefits outweigh the negative side to this."

The police department is committed to neighborhood safety and believes informing residents of arrests will help, he said.

"If it helps keep those neighborhoods safe, that's invaluable," Moore said.

Reasons to publish arrests include:

-- Residents can learn who has been arrested in their neighborhood.

-- People can follow arrests through Wisconsin's online court records.

-- If residents see an arrest, they can look online and learn about it.

-- People can check whether a landlord is moving problem tenants from one property to another.

justsaynotomath wrote "so much information can be dangerous (this is not the case with drunk drivers since we know they are guilty)."

What a piece of work.

Perhaps we should change that to read (so much information can be dangerous (this is not the case with justsaynotomath... and her relatives since we know they are guilty).

Let's hear it JSNTM...just for kicks and giggles...

And I believe we have a RIGHT to know if our neighborhood is going down the proverbial toilet!!! I have no problem with addresses being posted. The community is informed when sexual deviants are released back into our community. They have been "rehabilitated" right?

janesvillecomments, the prior story did link directly. This one has a link to the city's main page in the sidebar (not as useful nor as visible, I would agree).

They will need the "cops" TV show disclaimer on their website....

"All arrested persons are innocent until proved guilty in a court of law"

All that aside, a public record is a public record. Improving access to the records shouldn't be seen as a bad thing.

Not sure where you live spikesmom, but when I was going down W. Court St., there are was a command truck, police cars, ambulances and firetrucks blocking a street to my right. I'm not sure which street it was, possibly Academy or High. Not sure what was going on there though.

I just *love* it when the Gazette does a story about a web site on their web site and the web story about the web site doesn't include the web address of the web site their web story is about...

It's who, what, where, when, why, how, and WEB these days, has been for a few years now.

Yes and why do we have to wait 45 minutes to find out.

I just had 2 ambulances, 2 firetrucks, one police car and one incident command go by my house. Unless there is an accident with injuries there is never any reports of these calls in the paper. Something like this happens about every 7 or 8 weeks in my area, sometimes with even more units dispatched. It would be nice to see a record of these calls, either in the paper or something like JPD is doing. Recently on one of the Madison news stations there was a story about heroin OD's and the fact the JFD is getting a lot of calls and many times finding multiple people at one location, sometimes using units from multiple stations. If this is in fact what is going on we need to know where it is happening. They don't necessarily need to give names but locations and reasons for the calls would be nice ( at 12:55 pm a call to the 100 block of abc st. due to a ...). I'm not talking about the elderly man having a heart attack. What just went by my house today was not a response to a heart attack patient. I think anytime incident command is called in, there should be a record of it somewhere. Why does it need to be kept a secret?

No. The Gazette owes you a printed newspaper if you are a paid subscriber. Beyond that, the Gazette owes you nothing.
Look at the last line of the "Before you post a comment" section:"Remember, this is our site. We set the rules, and we reserve the right to remove any comments that we deem inappropriate."

I take it the comments on the home invasion story were disabled because there are no gang problems in the county, no drug problem and no problems with the hispanic in the area...

justsaynotomath...people have been using CCAP for years to check up on their neighbors and friends. Home addresses are posted there, too. It's public information, available freely.

Public arrest record was working just fine put them all in there. Adobe reader is a pain at times. I agree it doesn't give any detail on charge. DCs can be serious or as simple as littering depends on how the officer looks at the behavior. JMO
