DARIEN Political newcomer Evelyn Etten soundly beat incumbent Bob Metzner for Darien Village Board president.
Etten, a budget analyst with the state Department of Health Services, thinks the village board recently has mismanaged at least one of its major issues.
On March 7, the board voted to fire Police Chief Steve DeVoy. A hearing is pending that would make that decision final.
Etten thinks DeVoy should have gotten a disciplinary hearing before he was fired.
She did not say she would vote to re-instate DeVoy, although some have insinuated she and some candidates for village board would do so, Etten said.
“I’ve been accused of that,” Etten said about wanting to re-instate DeVoy. “That’s what we’ve been accused of. I just want the punishment to fit the crime.”
Etten looks forward to working with the new board. She thinks new faces will make for more evenly split votes.
“I think it’s going to be a good mix,” Etten said. “I think it’s going to be a more equally divided board.”
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office recently conducted an investigation of Metzner after he was accused of impersonating an officer. The results of the investigation were turned over to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office.
No charges have been filed at this time.
